Jamie Lynn Spears made dreams come true by announcing a “Zoey 101” reunion in a tweet on Monday, October 19. The reunion is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, just in time for moms to introduce their kids to one of their favorite childhood shows before Halloween.

According to an article from PopCrush, See it First: The Follow Me (Zoey 101) Experience will feature the original cast, along with appearances by JoJo Siwa, Dixie D’Amelio, Loren Gray, and more. In an interview with Nylon, Spears explained her motivation and inspiration for bringing the reunion together now.

“I just wanted to put something out there that’s happy,” she said. “This is reminiscent of that time, but also the modern Zoey. Who would Zoey be today? What would she sound like?”

The cast had a reunion before this, being featured in an All That sketch the summer past. Spears explained that was their way to “test the waters” of whether or not to do a full reunion. After the positive response from that mini-reunion, Spears knew it was time to do a full reunion. Spears explained her hopes that the reunion can connect with the original fans of the show who are now grown, some with children, as well as connecting with the younger generations of today.

“Obviously we want to meet her as an adult now, and I do think it should be a show for young adults,” she said. “We want to do it justice for the fans that were 10 and 12 when it first aired, while also bringing in the new generation of fans. Finding that balance will be really important because we want to connect with where people are today.”

Spears knows well the importance of connecting with the youth as the mom of two daughters, Maddie, 12, and Ivey Joan, 2. In an interview with People, Spears recalls the difficult time after announcing in 2007 she was pregnant with Maddie at 16.

“When we did announce that I was pregnant, I did hide away for a little bit during that time and I didn’t have a phone,” Spears said. “But of course, the paparazzi still found me.”

While Spears received plenty of attention for her teen pregnancy, she wasn’t alone. According to data from the CDC, there were 444,899 births to mothers between the ages of 15 and 19 in 2007. Since then, the birth rate for teen moms has continued to drop, with 179,871 in 2018.

There are several possible causes for the dropping teen birth rate. According to the Pew Research Center, the likely reason is better sexual education for teens, along with more use of contraceptives. The Pew Research Center reported that, of the teens surveyed who were engaging in sexual activity, 81% of females and 84% of males said they were using condoms, an increase from 2002 reports.

While Spears may not have ever expected to be the poster child for teen pregnancy in 2007, she reportedly caught on to her new role quickly. Her mother Lynne said in the Nylon interview that Spears took to motherhood “immediately and fully.” Today, Spears shares her two daughters with her husband Jamie Watson. She told Nylon that the attention from the media is “a whole family thing”

“My ultimate thing is just continuing doing stuff that I love and that serves me and my family,” Spears said, “and hopefully brings some happiness into the world, and for heaven’s sake, gives the Zoey fans what they want. Amen.”
