If you have champagne wishes and caviar dreams of owning a sprawling mega-mansion, you might not have to settle on a sensible single family home after all. One Canadian woman is offering you the chance to own her $1.7 million lakeside home — for just $25.
Due to the fickle real estate market, Alla Wagner has been struggling to find a buyer for her dream home in rural Alberta, Canada. While she once loved living in the stunning 5,000 square-foot stunner, which is perched on a picturesque lake about 40 miles south of Calgary, her ailing health has made it difficult for her to take care of it. After all, there is a lot to take care of. The house boasts three bedrooms, a chef’s kitchen, wine cellar, library, elegant wooden moldings, lots of windows and wraparound porch. It also offers stunning views of the lake, mountains and countryside. She describes it as "a writer’s or artist’s paradise," and we can totally see why.
So just how is she able to basically give a nearly $2 million pad away? Well, she isn’t, exactly.
In a Facebook post announcing the contest she has dubbed “Write a Letter, win A House,” she explained that to enter, everyone has to send a 350-word essay that "skillfully and creatively convey[s] to [Wagner] and a panel of judges how this spectacular home would change or improve his/her and their family’s’ life." Then, the 500 most compelling essays will be presented to a panel of judges who will choose the winner. BUT, before this happens, Wagner will have to raise the $1.7 million via the submission fees — which works out to 68,000 entries. The contest will last for three months (Until April 5, 2019) and is by that time she doesn’t receive enough entries it may be extended. If It becomes obvious that the $1.7 million won’t be reached, she will cancel the contest and refund the entrance fee.
Keep in mind that if you do win this house, you will be responsible for the accompanying maintenance costs and taxes — which are likely not cheap considering its value and size.
But regardless, go ahead and enter! Where else are you going to be able to find a mansion for $25 bucks?
