Workin' Moms is a Canadian TV show that hit the ground running back in 2017. The show was so successful that the group is filming their fourth season, which is set to air in the winter of next year.
Now available to stream on Netflix, Workin' Moms has become even more popular, highlighting all the highs and lows of parenting. The main characters (Kate Foster, Anne Carlson, Frankie Coyne, and Jenny Matthews) are shown juggling motherhood with their jobs and personal relationships. The show does a phenomenal job at pinpointing just how hard motherhood actually is. From gender stereotypes to breastfeeding at work to comparing parenting styles — Workin' Moms is raw and real.
While most viewers connect with these women and men in some form, we found 10 quotes that shine above the rest from the first three seasons.
10 'I'M WEARING AN UNDERWIRE BRA'
You could say that Kate Foster is the main character, even though the show does a great job of highlighting everyone's troubles. However, Kate is in a different predicament than the other ladies.
Known for loving her job, Kate chooses to work late one night instead of having a date night with her husband, Nathan. After apologizing to her husband for ditching him, she promises another date night in the future — even teasing him with a new bra. "I'm looking forward to date night so much, I'm wearing an underwire bra," she teases. In response, Nathan replies "What is this, spring break?".
9 'YOU CAN'T LET THE ANIMALS RUN THE ZOO'
One of the best parts about the earlier seasons of Workin' Moms is that most episodes begin with the moms in 'mommy and me' class. All the women go around and talk about their problems and ask their questions.
One woman, Alicia, gets a lock of flack from the other women for being too "perfect" and letting her kid run the show. After her child starts hitting her and defying everything she says, Kate says "You can't let the animals run in the zoo," which is a perfect analogy to motherhood.
8 '...CHILDBIRTH IS WAY HARDER'
Many fans of the show are frustrated by Jenny because she chooses her self over her family time and time again. However, there are many mothers out there who don't get the maternal feeling that others do. Some find it happier, healthier, and safer if they're not in their child's lives; and this is where Jenny finds herself.
In the first season, Jenny is wondering if she should go back to work. Telling her husband, "Eight months is not that much time. Soldiers with PTSD are given longer." Confused, her husband asks if she's seriously comparing herself to a war hero, to which she replies, "no, of course not. childbirth is way harder." Talk about relatable.
7 'CAN WE ALL BE BRAVE ADULTS AND JUST ADMIT THAT BABIES DON'T NEED YOGA?'
So many parents find themselves in 'mommy and me yoga classes.' For a majority of parents, they're using this time as a chance to get some exercise while also including their child. But I think many parents who've tried these classes before can admit they're way harder than it looks. Anne even chips in and says "Can we all be brave adults and just admit that babies don't need yoga!?" And she's right – babies don't care about yoga. Moms and dads do these classes for themselves – not so their baby can cat-cow.
6 'THEY MAY BE A LITTLE DEFLATED BUT THEY'RE NOT THROWING IN THE TOWEL. I LIKE 'EM'
In the opening scene of Workin' Moms, we're shown Kate, Anne, and Frankie all sitting in 'mommy and me' class comparing their breasts. Not too many women share those kinds of personal things with one another but it was freeing to actually see it done on TV.
Seeing Kate say she likes her breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding was sweet considering so many women feel the need to dislike their bodies after baby. Frankie, on the other hand, wasn't too proud of her "show dogs" (as she calls them) but it's all so relatable to women.
5 'SHUT IT, YOU MONSTER! YOUR MOTHER IS A DODDAMN ANGEL'
Anne is the only one with two kids when the first season kicked off. She already had an older daughter who was around seven or eight and she had her second baby who we meet in 'mommy and me' class. When her baby is eight months old, she finds out she's pregnant, yet again. Unsure if she wanted to keep it or get an abortion, Anne is tightly wound and stressed. When a young girl is seen screaming and crying at her hardworking mom, Anne is seen screaming at the kid, saying "Shut it, you monster! Your mother is a goddamn angel." The young girl is freaked out as her mother says "thank you!" in appreciation.
4 'I TELL YOU I WANT A NEW NANNY AND NOW YOU WANNA KILL MY DOG'
It's a very relatable moment when parents need to choose between their pet of their child. Many couples get a pet to prepare for a child, making their dog or cat their "practice" child. In Workin' Moms, Kate has her dog Ollie who happens to be a little aggressive with everyone but Kate.
After making her mother her son's nanny, she begins getting on Kate's nerves. After a few weeks, the relationship isn't working and Kate decides to let her mother go and to start looking for a new nanny. In the meantime, as soon as she's fired, she tells Kate she needs to put her dog down, which seemed too convenient for Kate and too relatable for viewers.
3 'SECRETS IN A MARRIAGE ARE LIKE FLEES ON A BED. YOU'LL BOTH BE SLEEPING ON THE COUCH'
As much as we love Kate and Nathan (especially after seeing how they met), they had a ton of deep-rooted issues in their marriage that they didn't really work on until it was too late.
Nathan cheating on Kate was inexcusable and damaging for the entire family, but Kate also shut him and Charlie out of her life when it came to working. After getting a promotion, Kate decided to hide the good news from him knowing he would be upset. Thankfully, her dad told her that marriage isn't easy and keeping secrets from one another only brings harm. Let's hope season four brings transparency in Kate and Nathan's relationship.
2 'YOU SHOULD REALLY THINK ABOUT CHANGING YOUR DIET, YOUR MILK STANKS'
Every woman and her partner is curious about what her breastmilk tastes like. It's normal to wonder and taste! In one opening scene, the girls are going around smelling milk in a glass, trying to guess if it's breastmilk or formula. After deciding that what they're smelling is formula, they agree that it smells like "science" and is gross. As it turns out, however, the milk in the cup was actually Alicia's breastmilk, making her self-conscious. After Anne suggests she changes her diet, it's a small fear many of us moms have considering it's how we're providing for our baby.
1 'I LOVE YOU BUDDY, BUT MOMMY IS GONNA CHECK A LITTLE BIT OF EMAIL – NOT BECAUSE I'M NOT DEDICATED TO YOUR WALKING DEVELOPMENT BUT BECAUSE IT'S BORING'
There are many women out there who want the best for their child but don't necessarily have the patience to sit around and do it. Kate is a great mom who has extra help so she can balance motherhood and work. However, there are times when her child is simply boring to her and she'd rather work. It's a small truth that many parents feel (whether it's work or another hobby) to ashamed to admit — but not Kate. She has no issues with being honest.
