A recent survey has shown that women, which includes a lot of moms, have been “carrying” households throughout the pandemic. COVID-19 brought a lot of stress, anxiety and worry to families everywhere, and it was mostly due to the extreme changes that happened as a result of a serious virus. Schools were moved to remote learning, and moms struggled with how to help their child. Women accounted for the majority of the jobs lost, meaning they were now at home and worried about financial income, and it also meant that they were now responsible for the home, apparently.

According to Slice and Newswire,  a survey was completed by CIBC, a Canadian banking institution, which found that women have been taking on more of the household responsibilities than men during the pandemic. The responsibilities ranged from childcare to financial business.

Moms have constantly been seen as the “default parent,” meaning that a lot of the parenting work falls on them automatically, and while the gender gap in parenting is narrowing, it is still very much present.

Results from the survey seemed to only confirm what a lot of people feel about responsibilities.

• It found that 65% of women were the ones supervising schoolwork with their children, which is against on 38% of men who do it.

•When it comes to childcare, the brunt of all the work also fell on woman, 60% of women take care of all the childcare responsibilities, while only 28% of men take care of it.

Women are also the ones who are handling the family finances. Six out of ten women who were polled are the ones who are taking care of making sure that the bills are paid, which is not an easy task when looking at the financial burden a lot of families are facing.

Carissa Lucreziano is the Vice President of CIBC, and she stated that this survey shows that women are “warriors,” and they are proving this throughout the pandemic. They are the ones who are “carrying” their families through this pandemic.

It calls for an acknowledgement of how much work that women are carrying right now, and this may point to the need for more support. Since the survey was conducted by a banking institution, it also led them to learn that women are also not planning for their future retirement, which to them, is concerning. Women's financial goals have been placed on the “back burner” because they are spending so much time making sure their household is OK and taken care of. It shows the need for conversation about preparing for the future.
