A woman went days without realizing that the soap she was using to wash her hands was not actually soap. It was old cheddar.

We get it. Life is a little hectic right now. There’s coronavirus going around, sure, but then there’s also fears of a global recession caused by viral panic and a sudden drop in oil prices. There’s the ongoing issue of climate change and wealth inequality, the rise of white nationalism and far-right ideologies, and who knows? Maybe aliens will invade tomorrow.

It can be hard to deal with. The least you can do is wash your hands to prevent the spread of disease. But with all these things pushing the global anxiety levels to the breaking point, it can be easy to miss the little things. Like the fact that the bar of soap you’re using is actually not soap but instead a block of cheddar cheese.

"Just realized my soap wasn’t working because it’s literally a block of cheese," wrote a woman on Reddit’s r/Funny. She’s since received over 6,500 upvotes thanks to a picture of her standing beside her kitchen sink holding a piece of old cheddar.

If you squint, you can definitely see how the mistake can be made. Good cheddar (not the mass-produced stuff you find wrapped in plastic at the grocery store) can often have those little flecks of white around the edges that makes it sort of resemble soap.

But the funniest part is that this wasn’t just a tiny mistake. This went on FOR DAYS.

“It was a couple days of 'Why isn’t this foaming?!'" Miley told CafeMom in an interview. "I come to realize it was a dried-out square of Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese. I spend a lot of time doing chores/washing my hands and I tend to use bar soap like that [unscented, yellowed] because my hands get dry."

However, this begs the question: what did Miley do with the soap? The answer may be in the top response to her Reddit post. "But that must mean......have we been eating Mac&Soap the entire week??"
