“Cause I I I’m in the stars tonight… so watch me bring the fire and set the night alight!” You’ve probably heard your tweens and fellow moms singing and playing this song on repeat for a few days now, haven’t you? Just in case you missed it, the title of this famous Top 1 song at the Billboard Top 100 is Dynamite, sang by no other than BTS.

And you might be wondering, who is BTS? Where are they from and why does the younger generation love them so much?

How BTS Became Famous

BTS a 7-member boy band hailing from South Korea. The acronym BTS originally stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단), which translates to Bulletproof Boyscouts in English. The name represents their oath to their infinite resilience and perseverance against the bullets of prejudice. The band’s loyal fan base community is called ARMY, an acronym for Adorable Representative of M.C. Youth.

It is tied to the Korean meaning of the band’s Korean name, which when put together, forms the mission of BTS and ARMY to guard and stand up for their hopes and dreams together. In mid-2017, as the group rebrands its image, they later on announced that BTS would also stand for Beyond The Scene.

The group debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment, which at that time, was a small and almost-bankrupt entertainment company. During that time, Big Hit was extremely low in funds and only had BTS as the sole KPop group under its wing. The Bangtan Boys were still in their teenage years back then, with the youngest member just entering high school.

Through the years, BTS grew into fine young men whose artistic capabilities sent shockwaves to the whole music industry globally, enough to raise everyone’s standards when it comes to music videos and concert choreographies. They were even invited to speak at the United Nations about youth empowerment and education.

Who Are They?

So, come and get to know the 7 members of the band.

RM (Kim Namjoon)

Being the leader and lead rapper of the group, RM was the first one to get scouted by Big Hit Founder, Bang Si-Hyuk, when RM was still an underground battle rapper.

Being the leader, RM is also known to be the English translator of the group. He taught himself by watching all 10 seasons of Friends on repeat. And can you believe that he has an IQ of 148? Genius, indeed!

Jin (Kim Seokjin)

Also known as Mr. Worldwide Handsome, Jin is the eldest member (or as what we say in Korean, the hyung) of the group. He was reportedly scouted by Big Hit in the streets, when he was about to ride the bus! Having no background in singing or dancing, Jin originally wanted to audition as an actor. However, Big Hit was able to convince him to try new things, and become a BTS trainee. Now, he’s one of the lead vocals of the group who’s always the first one to belt some really high notes!

Suga (Min Yoongi)

Suga is the fastest rapper in BTS. Big Hit signed with him as a producer after he won second place in one of the company’s rap contests. Though Suga originally just wanted to become a producer, he was later on placed as an idol trainee. Now one of the most acclaimed producers even outside BTS, Suga has won awards for producing music! He’s also one of the most active members in band when it comes to writing their lyrics.

J-Hope (Jung Hoseok)

Being the lead dancer of the group, J-Hope has long been famous in the KPop industry as one of the best dancers ever. Because of his unparalleled dancing skills, Big Hit spotted his potential early on and signed him as an idol trainee. But with a sudden twist of fate, J-Hope almost didn’t debut! He was decided to leave BTS until RM convinced him and Big Hit to let J-Hope stay. Now he’s one of the group’s rappers, along with RM and Suga.

Jimin (Park Jimin)

Jimin, also called as Baby Mochi by his ARMY fans because of his pout, was the final member to join BTS. He’s one of the best dancers of the group! Before being an idol trainee, Jimin was studying contemporary dance in Busan and was even one of the top students. Now, he’s not just the most flexible in the group, he also has the highest pitch and can hit the highest notes along with Jin!

V (Kim Taehyung)

Wondering what V stands for? Being the last member to debut, Taehyung chose the name V as his stage name because he says the letter stands for Victory. It was reported that V was a hidden member of when BTS debuted, because Big Hit was scared that other companies might pirate him early on for his looks and talent! Now , V has one of the biggest fan bases in the group because of his undeniable charm, deep, soothing voice. He is also the first one to try acting, and was part of a Korean drama, Hwarang.

Jungkook (Jeon Jungkook)

Jungkook, aka the Golden Maknae, is the band’s youngest member. He has only started high school when Big Hit signed him as a trainee. Jungkook, who’s also called as Kookie by his ARMY fans, is also usually the lead singer and dancer because of his flawless, stable voice that never shakes despite BTS’ complicated dance choreo!

Why BTS Is Loved By Fans?

Once you start listening to BTS’ songs and watching their music videos with an open, non-discriminating heart, you’d totally understand the hype. As Paolo Coelho says in his tweet:

In BTS, everything is meticulously prepared for – they do not lip sync during performances, their dance choreographies are well-coordinated, and the production sets of their music videos and concerts are over the top. Every member can sing and dance really well!

And apart from their amazing talents coupled with their excellent production, as an adult ARMY fan, what makes me really love their music is their lyrics. Teens and adults can resonate with their songs at different points of their lives – from heartbreak to celebrations to teaching themselves how to love themselves. There is a song for every emotion, which is why they can easily blend into their listeners’ lives.

So, you don’t have to worry about your tweens admiring them. They’re wholesome, and as far as we can see, they do bring a positive influence and a ray of hope to everyone. And as parents, it is important to teach your kids how to respect BTS as real, human beings and not objects they own. By doing this, you can raise them to be healthy, compassionate ARMY fans of BTS.
