With the new Netflix true-documentary series, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, making headlines, it’s put a spotlight on the missing girl's parents: Gerry and Kate McCann. Since May of 2007, the couple has not stopped their search for their daughter Madeleine after she went missing during their family vacation in Portugal.

The docuseries explores the many possibilities of what could have happened to Madeleine the night she went missing. And now a lot of fans of the series are wanting to know more about the couple, what they have been doing in the last decade, and what their plans are as they continue to hang on to the hope of one day finding their missing daughter.

It’s been 11 years since 3-year-old Madeleine McCann mysteriously disappeared from her bed inside her family’s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Gerry and Kate McCann, along with a group of friends, were dining about 50 meters away from the apartment in a tapas restaurant. About every 20 minutes during the dinner, the couple checked on Madeleine and her twin siblings back in the apartment.

Between 9 pm and 9:30 pm, two of the McCann’s friends, Jane Tanner and Matthew Oldfield, checked on the children. Oldfield was reportedly the last person to have seen Madeleine, although, in the docuseries, all he saw was a bright light coming from the window of the apartment. He also claims to have heard Madeleine shuffling in her bed.

By 10pm that night, Madeleine’s mother Kate discovered that the young girl was missing, sparking one of the biggest missing children cases the media has ever seen. Local reporters have even described the disappearance as one of the most “heavily reported missing-person cases" in modern history. The McCanns are still searching for Madeleine until this day, as her whereabouts remain unknown.

Gerry and Kate were both born in 1968. Gerry was born in Glasgow, Scotland while Kate was raised near Liverpool. They met back in 1993 in Glasgow and were married five years later.

Gerry graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BS degree in physiology and sports science. According to The Sun, he is qualified in medicine and obtained his MD in 2002. He’s been a consultant cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester since 2005. His wife Kate graduated from the University of Dundee with a degree in medicine.

In addition to Madeleine, the couple also has twins, Amelie and Sean, who are now 13. Both Amelie and Sean were sleeping in the same room that Madeleine mysteriously disappeared from the last night that the McCanns saw their daughter.

The McCanns have said that one of the reasons why they refused to participate in the Netflix docuseries about their daughter is because they are afraid it would hinder their ongoing investigation. They also said that the views expressed in the documentary do not align with their own, reports Country Living.

At one point both Gerry and Kate were named as possible suspects. Kate was even offered a plea deal in exchange for her confession. A former police chief by the name of Goncalo Amaral, who is featured and was interviewed for the Netflix documentary, even wrote a book suggesting that the McCanns might have faked their daughter’s abduction. The couple sued him for libel and won back in 2015.

The McCanns have not given up on their hope of one day reuniting with their daughter. They have set up a website that includes updates about the search along with a section for donations. They are both now 51 and still live in Britain. Gerry still works as a doctor, while Kate never returned to her part-time job as a locum. Kate has said that their twins carry on with normal lives and that she and her husband do too, adding that they will never give up on the search for their missing daughter. However, she added that the twins know everything about Madeleine McCann’s case and have stated that both her brother and her sister want her back.

Kate also told the BBC that she often goes back to Praia da Luz for personal reasons. She said that while the area does bring her painful memories, it’s also the last time that she was with Madeleine. She walks the streets and looks for clues while trying to guess for answers. Madeleine McCann has been missing for approximately 11 years and 10 months. The search for Madeleine attracted just as much as attention as the untimely death of Princess Diana back in 1997.

The Scotland Yard opened up its own inquiry, called Operation Grange, in 2011. Gerry and Kate McCann continue to work closely with authorities and detectives, although there have been no concrete leads in the case in years.

As of press time, Gerry and Kate McCann have refused to make any additional comments about the documentary. The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann is currently available on Netflix.
