With Christmas season upon us, there are a few things that it is important to do. One of the most important things parent’s can teach their children to do at this time of year is to give back. It is easy for children to get wrapped up in the “getting” at this time of year, and they forget about the “giving.” It falls on the parent to make sure their children know how important it is to give to children who maybe don’t have as much this year at the holidays.

One of the best ways to do this, is to encourage children to go through their old toys and books and decide what they no longer play with that they can give to other children. This helps mom clear out some space in her home before a barrage of new toys comes in.

According to Children’s Minnesota, it is never too late to teach your children how to give back, so don’t worry if this is your first year encouraging your child to give back. It is also best if it is a family activity. This may be a good time for mom to go through her closet and give some of her clothes and used items away to help motivate their child. When it comes to sending the toys on their way, where can mom send them? There are several organizations that will take gently used toys to choose from.

Plain Old Charities

It may sound too easy, but there is not usually a need to get really fancy when you are looking to get rid of some old toys. According to Good Housekeeping, charities like Goodwill and The Salvation Army will always take gently used toys and turn around and sell them to make money to support their charity work.

Toys for Tots is also an excellent option that is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. They will take toys all year long and not just at Christmas time.

Think Outside The Box

There are a lot of families out there who are really struggling right now, and they may not be comfortable approaching a charity and asking for donations. Social media may be a good option this year to reach some real local families. If you are a part of some mom groups, post your items in them for free (or for a small amount/trade). That way you know your items are helping a family in your community.

Homes & Shelters

If you can look up your local children’s or women’s shelter, they would likely appreciate some gently used toys. Children who are living in the shelter often have very little with them in terms of toys and playthings, so you can call your nearest center and see how you can donate some toys.

Daycare Centers

Daycare centers are another option and they are always looking for toys. According to The Spruce, daycares go through toys very quickly, as any mom would understand. They also do not typically have a large budget when it comes to purchasing new supplies, so they are always grateful for any new items that come their way.

Not An Obvious Place

This one is not an obvious one, but it is a service that is normally in great need of toys. Local churches and other religious establishments will often offer children services throughout the week and they will normally gladly take any used toys off your hands. It is a good idea to call ahead of time and see what they may be in need of. Churches also have a network of charitable organizations, so chances are if they are not accepting at the moment, they can direct you to the right place.

Police And Fire Departments

There are a lot of children out there who have to live through some tough situations and the year may have not been kind to them. Children who have had the police or the fire department come to handle an emergency. It is common that policemen and firemen will carry small toys and trinkets with them in case they can use it to bring comfort to a child on the scene. This is a wonderful opportunity for donations, just make sure that you call ahead of time to see what items they are looking for.
