October is the month of all Halloween and all things spooky. Pumpkins are carved to look devious, cobwebs are creepily draped everywhere, scarecrows guard homes and bats droop from ceilings as if they’re flying. Depending on how elaborate the decorations are, you may even find the bravest of adults getting a little scared if the decorations are realistic enough.

That’s why it’s no surprise when 3-year-old Charlie McCormick completely lost it on an animatronic spider that he perceived to be real in a Michigan Spirit Halloween Store. The huge spider was on display and part of the store’s decorations, but little Charlie did not get the memo. While out with his dad on Sunday, Charlie spotted a huge and fuzzy spider on display in the store. In true toddler form, curiosity gets the best of Charlie and he decided to take a closer look at the spider.

As Charlie came closer, the spider sensed the movement and came to life, which freaked Charlie out. Most people would probably be a little startled (at a minimum) by the sudden movement of the spider, but depending on your age and ability to makes sense of things, you would realize that the spider was fake. Charlie, being three, didn’t possess this ability. Charlie’s first reaction was flight as he took a few steps backward away from the spider.

Eventually, the fight part of his flight or fight instincts got the best of him and Charlie’s next move was to attack the spider in anticipation of its next attack. Charlie’s dad, Frank managed to pull Charlie of the spider before he was able to do too much damage, but not before recording a 14 second video of the hilarious fight. This video eventually made it to Frank McCormick’s Facebook feed.

It was probably his intent to record the video so that friends and family could get as much of a laugh as he did watching Charlie’s reaction. He could never in his wildest dreams anticipated that the video of Charlie and the spider would go viral. The video was posted on Sunday and since then has received over 24 million views proving two things 1) never underestimate the power of a freaked out toddler and 2) you never know when an innocent family outing can make you an overnight internet celebrity.
