For those of us who grew up in the 80's, very few movies are as beloved as The Princess Bride. It's one of those rare movies that everyone loves, no one dislikes, and it never gets old. We've watched it several times as adults, and it just gets better and better with age.
Our own kids are fans now, too, invested in the love between Wesley and Princess Buttercup and rooting for them to find happiness at the end of the movie. It's got romance, comedy, action, and adventure. They just don't make them like they used to! For years, we've wondered what ever became of Wesley and Buttercup, but we also know that some movies shouldn't be made into sequels.
However, that doesn't mean those movies can't be made into musicals! A musical based on The Princess Bride has been rumored for quite some time, and it looks like our fairy tale dreams may soon be coming true. As we wish!
Disney Theatrical Productions has assembled a team of Tony Award-winning Broadway alums to write the musical adaptation of The Princess Bride. Bob Martin and Rick Elice will handle the book and script, while David Yazbek handles the score for the production. This isn't the first time efforts have been made to bring TPB to the stage. William Goldman, who wrote the book the original movie is based on, teamed up with Adam Guettel at one point to make it happen. But their collaboration fell through in 2007, and Goldman passed away in 2018.
But luckily for us, Disney wasn't about to let this magical idea go. Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in 2013 that he was committed to seeing this production come to life, and now it looks like his dream to see The Princess Bride on stage may be coming true. There's no word yet on when we can expect to stand in line for tickets to the production, but you can bet your booties we'll be glued to the news as the production moves through the channels on its way to the stage. If any movie deserves the musical treatment, it's The Princess Bride.
