Why Madeleine McCann's Parents Aren't In The Netflix Documentary

A new Netflix true-crime documentary called The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann once again explores what might have happened to the young 3-year-old British toddler who mysteriously disappeared from her bed during a vacation in Portugal with her parents back in 2007. A lot of viewers are wondering why Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, are not featured in the documentary.

According to Digital Spy, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann features several and never-before-seen interviews with friends and associates of the McCann family along with investigators who have worked on the case for well over a decade now. The documentary attempts to piece together what might have happened to little Madeleine the night that she went missing. The little girl mysteriously vanished from her bed inside a vacation apartment in Praia de Luz, a popular resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. The media in Portugal have called the disappearance as one of the most heavily reported missing-person cases in modern history.

The two people who were not interviewed for the Netflix documentary are Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann. They refused to take part in the project, mostly because the series does not reflect their personal views of what may have occurred the night their daughter disappeared. Both doctors, the McCanns were enjoying dinner the night of the disappearance. Madeleine, along with her twin siblings, were sleeping in their vacation apartment, about 55 meters away from their restaurant. At about 10pm, Kate McCann realized that her daughter was missing and called the police.

In a statement to the press, Madeleine’s parents said: "The production company told us that they were making the documentary and asked us to participate. We did not see – and still do not see – how this program will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it.”

Kate and Gerry McCann have also warned that the true-crime documentary might hinder their ongoing search for their daughter. Madeleine has been missing for 11 years and 10 months now. The couple have used several different private detectives to help track her down. The Scotland Yard has also been working on the case sine 2011.

The couple’s personal attorney has also warned that The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann might fuel public conspiracy theories. There is already a number of sites and forums that are dedicated to what might have happened to the young toddler.
