The new Netflix documentary, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is once again exploring the different possibilities of what might have happened the night that the 3-year-old British tot went missing from her vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. For the last 11 years, Madeleine’s parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, have used every possible means to try and locate their daughter. Yet, authorities, detectives and even several journalists that have been working on the case believe that the McCanns might be hiding crucial information to help solve the mystery. Some of the details needed might be in what Portuguese media outlets call the McCann’s “Pack of Silence.”

During the night of May 3, 2007, Madeleine McCann mysteriously disappeared from her parents’ apartment vacation at the Ocean Club resort without a trace. Gerry and Kate McCann, along with several other close friends, were dining at a tapas restaurant about 50 meters away from the apartment that Madeleine and her twin siblings slept in.

The McCanns said that a person from their group supposedly checked on the kids every 20 minutes or so throughout their dinner. At about 10:00pm that night, Kate McCann discovered that Madeleine was no longer sleeping in her bed.

According to Refinery, along with the McCanns, the group of adults who were present at the dinner included David and Fiona Payne, Fiona’s mom Dianne, Matthew and Rachael Oldfield, Russell O’Brien and partner Jane Tanner. The Pact of Silence first made headlines when Portuguese journalists Margarida Davim and Felícia Cabrita suggested that there was an agreement between the McCanns and their friends to not divulge in any details of what might have happened that night. Some critics believe that it doesn’t seem plausible that an adult form the group would be able to check on the eight children between them in 20-minute intervals.

Cabrita said that it seemed odd that the investigators only suspected that there was a kidnapper without looking at any of the adults that were with the McCanns. It was also noted that the McCanns’ apartment was not in clear view from where their party was seated at the tapas restaurant, despite what Gerry and Kate McCann had previously described. This, along with several other questionable details, is the reason why journalists believe that the McCanns and their friends have made ‘Pact of Silence’ in order to keep the truth of what happened that night a mystery.

The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann is currently available on Netflix.
