Fans of the 1982 hit cult classic movie The Dark Crystal mark your calendars because the much-anticipated prequel The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance will air on Netflix in August! The prequel is set to debut on Friday, August 30 and will consist of ten, one-hour episodes according to a press release from the streaming giant.
The prequel will be set on the world of Thra like the original movie. It will follow three Gelfling heroes, Rian, Brea and Deet, voiced by Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nathalie Emmanuel on their quest to save their world. The official description of the prequel states that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance “returns to the world of Thra with an all-new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.” The trio will "inspire a rebellion against the cruel Emperor when they discover a horrifying secret."
Director Louis Leterrier told EW he was determined to make this prequel look as much like the Jim Henson and Frank Oz directed original as possible, which included using actual puppets oftentimes instead of CGI. “I was not fighting against anyone, I was fighting against common sense and practicality,” he says with a laugh. “It’s so so complicated to build a puppet, hire puppeteers, all that stuff. We chose the long, hardest road and we’re very thankful [we did]. It looks absolutely stunning.”
“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will combine the art of puppetry perfected by The Jim Henson Company, with Louis’ vision, powerful storytelling and a mix of cutting-edge digital imagery and visual effects,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “I can’t wait for families around the world to see how we bring these unique characters to life.”
The prequel boasts a who's who of voice talents including Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg. Donna Kimball will take over the voice duties for the character Aughra who was voiced by Oz in the original film. Various puppeteers from the production will also provide their voice talents.
