A new study was done that found that smartphones may actually be helping your teenager’s memory. It is rare to see a teenager out there who does not have a phone in their hand, or to their ear. It is no secret that smartphones and technology are very important to the youth of today.

While there are a lot of benefits to technology, and smartphones, parents tend to worry about the negative aspects and the impact they can have on their child. That they could be looking at inappropriate content, or accessing things that they shouldn’t be.

There is also the fear that too much time spent online can hinder their development. According to Medical Xpress, a new study has found that smartphones can help improve memory skills in adults, and in youth.

The study was done by University College London, and it can be read in full here. It combated the idea that the use of smartphones can make someone “lazy” or forgetful. This may be reassuring for parents out there who are concerned about their child’s smartphone use.

The researchers found that digital devices, like cell phones, can help people store and remember important information. This means that a large portion of their brain remains free to remember and think of other things that they would normally forget. It basically gives their brain a much-needed “break” from the small things that need to be remembered.

To complete the study, researchers looked at 158 volunteers who were between the ages of 18 and 71. The participants were asked to look at 12 numbered circles on a screen, some went to the left, and some went to the right.

They were told that they could set reminders on their digital device for half of them, but they had to remember the other half by themselves. They found that the participants, who used their digital devices to remember half, were better able to remember the other half, and they had a quicker recall time. The downside was that the half they told their digital device to remember, they did not remember. However, their recall and memory for the other half increased by 27%, which is a big improvement.

The researchers were surprised that the brain was able to remember “unsaved” information that it would normally forget. It looks like smartphones may be helping our youth, but it may still be wise to make sure they have a healthy relationship with it.
