It’s hard to believe that Teen Mom has been on TV for almost ten years now. Viewers have watched the cast members go from awkward new moms to women with full families. There were plenty of ups and downs, and certainly, a lot happened that made viewers shake their heads. The original cast of Teen Mom included girls from season one of "16 and Pregnant". Namely, Maci Bookout, Catelynn Lowell, Amber Portwood, and Farrah Abraham. While producers decided to continue the series by introducing "Teen Mom 2;" which included members from the Season 2 cast of "16 and Pregnant": Chelsea Houska, Jenelle Evans, Kailyn Lowry, and Leah Messer.
The families have certainly changed over the years since those first seasons, and fans even saw some of the struggling mothers clean up their acts and have healthy families. There were a lot of memorable moments and some things that weren’t even put on air. There have been new babies, marriages, and even some divorces. Fans even got to see some of the cast interact with producers, and sometimes it got heated. It doesn’t seem like the franchise is going anywhere anytime soon, but fans may want to look back on things that have happened over the years. Check out these 10 things on Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 that they didn’t air on TV and 10 that make our hearts melt.
Let's start with the 10 moments that made our hearts melt...
Kailyn already had a son when she got together with Javi and then they had a son together named Lincoln. Javi and Isaac immediately bonded which was a beautiful thing to watch. Even after Lincoln was born the stepfather and son still remained close. It was obvious that Javi loved him a lot. When Javi and Kailyn broke up, Javi still wanted to be a part of Isaac's life even though he wasn’t his biological son. Javi would often follow Issac to his dad’s house because they were just that close. We loved the fact that Javi was willing to be there for him.
There’ve seriously been a lot of stellar dads on the show considering they were all just teens. Taking on a child that is not your own is not easy for everyone. Some men don’t want that kind of responsibility. But when Cole DeBoer came into Chelsea Houska’s life, he immediately took on the role of dad for Adam. Aubree also was lacking a father figure that she needed and Adam stepped up to the plate and provided that for her. It says a lot about Cole’s character that he was willing to do that. We have seen the relationship grow between them over the years, and it’s amazing.
Giving up your child for adoption is never an easy decision for a parent to make but Catelynn did see her daughter again. Carly was not allowed to be filmed but the adoptive parents did allow a couple of meet and greets be televised. In 2010, Catelynn and Tyler went down to North Carolina to meet her daughter who was one at the time. They were excited and nervous to see the child. MTV said to look on their faces during the meeting was absolutely beautiful. It was one of the best moments that we have seen on air.
Sometimes on the show, it was the guys that became solo dads instead of the moms. Tyler Baltierra and Catelynn have had a lot of ups and downs over the years. Catelynn couldn’t deal with the stress and anxiety of her life and there were some tough situations that required Tyler to be a solo dad. The loss of the baby she endured didn’t help matters. At one point, Catelynn had to check into a recovery center to get help with some of the problems that she was going through. Tyler was left alone to raise their daughter Nova but he turned out to be a pretty amazing dad.
It would be a struggle for an adult to deal with a disability in a child, never mind a teen mom, but Leah really stepped up to the plate. One of Leah’s twin girls, Ali was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy before the age of one. Leah is so patient with her daughter and gives her plenty of love of care all the time. She tells her daughter all the time how strong she is and will often post quotes and pictures stating the same thing. Ali has everything that she needs, including the technology to walk as well as specialists that go to school with her.
One of the sweetest relationships on the show is between brothers Isaac and Lincoln. All kids have their moments when they don’t get along, but for the most part, these two have a great bond. We have seen plenty of sweet moments between the brothers that just make our hearts melt. Isaac has been the perfect big brother to Lincoln since the moment that Lincoln was born. Over the years he has helped to teach his brother how to be a boy. You can see plenty of pictures on the internet of these cute boys and we love how sweet their relationship is.
Corey Simms and Leah Messer have always had a turbulent relationship, but Corey has always done right by his girls. They mean a lot to him and it’s obvious that he’s always going to be there for them. “The current custody situation, just honestly … whatever we think is best for them, we do. We are doing the week on and then a week off,” Leah told Us about her custody agreement with Corey Simms. “It’s always been 50/50. People were like, ‘Leah lost custody’ … I almost did, but I never lost custody of my children.”
It may appear that these moms are struggling sometimes but the good thing is that the show provides them with a good amount of money so that they can provide their children with a good life. The number seems to change all the time but in 2016, Adam Lind claimed that Chelsea Houska made $250,000 that season. The dads on the show don’t make as much money as the moms do, but they do get a paycheck as well. Even the kids are being paid to be on the show, but it’s unclear as to how much they get paid.
Another great father in the show is Jeremy, and it’s been heartwarming to see him interact with his daughters. Not only is he a great dad for his daughter Adalynn but he’s also been a great stepdad for Leah’s twins, Ali and Gracie. The two have since been divorced, and he’s still very much in the picture. He is great at co-parenting with Leah. He wants to be a part of the children’s life which is especially important for his daughter Addie. Leah is lucky to have him in her life because he’s a good example for his children.
It was really sad to hear the story about the passing of Farrah’s ex, Derek. He passed away before Sophia was even born, which makes it even more tragic because Sophia never knew him in the first place. In 2012, during an episode of Teen Mom, Farrah took Sophia to the gravesite to see her father. Farrah took the time to share some stories with her daughter. It was an emotional moment for mother and daughter and it was one of the times that the MTV crew was part of it.
And here are the 10 things they never aired on TV...
Something that we don’t get to see is how the moms bond behind the scenes. They all know what it’s like to be a teen mom, so they easily bond. Chelsea and Maci bonded over the years because they went through similar situations with their baby daddies. During a tough time that Maci was going through, Chelsea reached out to offer her some support. Chelsea knew what it was like to be with a guy that always seemed to get into trouble. It’s nice to know that there are girls that have each other’s backs on the show.
There is a huge crew behind the making of Teen Mom in order to make the show happen. There are producers roaming around as well as the camera crew. One thing that we don’t see onscreen is the friendships between cast and crew. According to MTV News, there are huge bonds between the children, moms, and crew. Each mom has their own producer and a crew member that is specifically assigned to them. The crew and cast have become a family that works together. We would love to see a show where it’s just behind-the-scenes stuff.
With so many females on the show who have very different personalities, there was bound to be a fight at some point. Kailyn didn’t like having Briana near her kids. To her credit, the Teen Mom has tried to calmly talk to Briana about the issues that they have between them. She knew that Briana was going to be part of Javi’s life and just wanted things to be straightened out. The conversation didn’t go very well however and Briana attacked Kailyn. This was not filmed and the producers were able to pull them apart.
Who would have thought that a show about teen moms would last as long as it did? The producers certainly didn’t think it would. The show was originally just meant to be a “filler” show and wasn’t meant to stay on past the first season. Instead, it became such a massive hit that they had to keep it on air. Producers told Cosmopolitan in 2017 that the show had been meant to fill the time while they were waiting for the next season of 16 & Pregnant to be finished filming. Everyone loves a success story, and producers were happy to keep the show going.
As we said before, each cast member was given their own producer to work with them on the show. "I know I feel much more comfortable because whatever I'm talking about on camera, I've probably already talked to [my producers] about it," Maci Bookout told Cosmo. "It just takes everybody remembering there's a difference between our friendship relationship and our professional relationship. But we've all done this for so long that we are very aware of times when one relationship needs to override the other one."
When it came to this couple they were restricted because they had a curfew. They were only allowed to film after school and had to be home early to do homework. "I can remember, during the first two seasons, only being able to film with Catelynn and Tyler from 4 p.m. to about 8 p.m. because [Tyler's mom] Kim had a rule that they were not allowed to film past 8," producer Kirsten Malone (who you might know as KiKi from the show) said. "They had school and had to do their homework, which I thought was fantastic. It did not make our jobs easy, but we did it, and we're still super respectful of the kids and their schedules.”
A former cameraman went on Reddit AMA in 2012 and leaked that the show is scripted. The AMA was later deleted but not before fans found out that the storylines aren’t always real. "The storyline is heavily produced by the director," the cameraman said on Reddit. "It gets to the point where the director is feeding them lines." It’s hard to say if this Reddit admission is true because it could be a disgruntled employee, but it’s certainly interesting. We have to wonder if some of those dramatic stories are even real.
Every year the Teen Mom crew gets together and talks about what went on in the season once it’s over. Earlier in the year, the crew witnessed things getting heated between Janelle and her mother backstage. Her mother had custody of her son Jace, and Janelle wanted to take him with her. Janelle walked out with her son and put him in the car and drove off. According to Us Weekly, the producers were forced to call the police because legally she was not allowed to have her son. That must have been an uncomfortable moment for the producers.
You may think that what goes on during the show is all for entertainment purposes, but the crew won’t hesitate to call children’s services if they see something wrong. "We've called the police on cast members over the years, and let the cops handle the situation," a crew member allegedly said. "We have also called CPS on cast members plenty of times when we see things in regard to the children that don't seem right. Viewers don't see everything. They would probably never know that's happening behind the scenes. The cast member may not even know it was us, to be honest."
The crew may not like some stuff that they see the parents do behind the scenes but unless it’s illegal, they will generally stay out of it. The cameras will continue to roll even if the parents are doing questionable things. "It's not illegal to yell or scream at your kids, so even if we don't agree with how [a cast member] is parenting, we cannot call the cops for something like that," the source said. "We can't step in if that's how someone parents." That can be frustrating to watch but it’s true, sometimes you have to let people parent the way that they want.
