For most of us, we associate Instagram influencers with celebrities, reality stars or popular bloggers who post sponsored content, or sponcon, on their Instagram pages. These influencers are paid to promote any random product to their usually large social media following.

Anyone who follows any of the Kardashians, Teen Moms or even Bachelor or Bachelorette contestants have no doubt seen the variety of diet teas, teeth whiteners, and beauty boxes these social media influencers get paid to promote. And maybe you've even bought an item or two thanks to these sponsored posts. It seems there are new social media influencers in town now, and you may be much more inclined to buy what they're selling than any random reality star.

Teachers have been turning to Instagram and earning a much welcome supplemental income by becoming teacher influencers on the popular image sharing site. Many of these teachers first earned a significant social media following as "teacher bloggers" but have parlayed that popularity in to a means of supplemental income through the website Teachers Pay Teachers, an online resource that allows teachers to buy and sell the resources they need to run their classroom effectively.

Many of these teachers have huge followings where they can promote their products that are available on Teachers Pay Teachers. Amy Groesbeck is one a teacher who has turned being an Instagram teacher influencer in to a lucrative second job. Groesbeck told the website that her regular teachers salary is approximately $50,000 a year, but thanks to Instagram and Teachers Pay Teachers she now earns a supplemental $200,000 annually!

“I’m a single mom, and it’s because of Teachers Pay Teachers that I’ve been able to buy my own home, buy my own vehicle, fund vacations for my family,” she said. “I would never have been able to do it just teaching alone.”

“So really, I do consider it my main source of income, to be honest,” said Groesbeck.

Teachers who use the Teachers Pay Teachers site also make sure they promote each other on social media. Nicki Dingraudo, whose Instagram account, The Sprinkle Topped Teacher boasts almost 30,000 followers also credits the Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) site with helping supplement her income, and she makes sure she promotes other teachers and their products who use it as well.

“With the TPT income, I can pay all my bills and pay to go to CrossFit and do extra things like that — travel a little bit, go back and forth home to Chicago where I’m from, all those things I can do because of TPT and my Instagram,” she told Buzzfeed.

Despite already having a full time job, many of these teacher influencers have admitted that creating eye catching classroom products and Instagram posts can also be time consuming. “I lock myself in the office and spend at least six hours a day working on products and creating images to post on Instagram and things like that,” she told BuzzFeed News. “It really is a second full-time job.”

Adam Freed, CEO of Teachers Pay Teachers, Adam Freed, knows that the platform has become a viable source of income for many teachers.

“Some come just to share to help other teachers and to make a little extra pocket money,” said Freed. “And then some of them actually become extraordinary content creators, and they really become almost mini-publishers.”

While we can all agree that teachers should be paid way more than they are, it's nice to see some of them are capitalizing on the influencer market and making some money off their awesome ideas, and supporting the ideas of other teachers.
