Just when we think that we live in an accepting world, something happens that shocks the nation. A substitute teacher has been fired for making comments towards a student who has two fathers. This teacher worked at a Utah elementary school and she told a fifth-grade student, who has two dads, that “homosexuality is wrong.”

This comment was made during a pre-Thanksgiving exercise at Deerfield Elementary School located in Cedar Hills, Utah. Students were asked to list things that they were thankful for. One of the father’s, Louis van Amstel, said that his son told the class that he was thankful for his two fathers. These two men are currently in the process of officially adopting him.

Louis van Amstel was a former dancer on the hit ABC show Dancing With the Stars. He stated that he got chocked up when he heard that his son said that he was thankful for finally being adopted by two dads. He also stated, “Well, the substitute teacher was giving her very clear opinion about two men is wrong, homosexuality is wrong. Yeah, so you can imagine that set us off.” He said in a social media post.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, after the student said what he was thankful for, the teacher asked him, “Why on earth would you be happy about that?” before going on a rant for about half an hour about why two men living together is a sin. She also, reportedly, looked at the boy and said that it was nothing to be thankful for.

Louis said that at the end of the day, his son did not want to talk about what happened nor did he want the substitute teacher to get into trouble. However, three of his classmates did not feel the same way and they told the teacher to stop and immediately went to the office to report the behavior. She was escorted out of the school building shortly after.

Louis wrote that he was extremely proud of the fellow students and the school for standing up for his family and against the bully. The school did take this very seriously, and the substitute teacher was fired after an investigation was done.
