It is hard to remember a time when we did not have to wear a face mask when we went out. The days we could just get in the car and go shopping without having to worry about whether there was a face mask in the car, because if there wasn’t you either had to go back home and get one or you couldn’t go shopping that day. Children have had to adapt to wearing a face mask as well, because children over 2 are expected to wear them as well. They have to wear them when out shopping and when in school.

This is a difficult thing for any child, but it can be especially hard for children who have autism. They may not be able to understand why they need to wear a mask and a lot of them have sensory processing issues and wearing the mask can bother their face. Thankfully, Sesame Street is here again to try and help parents all over the world.

Sesame Street released a video that is aimed at helping children with autism cope better with wearing a mask, and it is just another tool in mom’s toolbelt to work with. The video features Julia, a 4-year-old Muppet with autism. Julia is having a video call with her dad, and she is telling him about how happy she is to be going to the park soon.

Her dad quickly reminds her that she needs to wear a mask, and Julia is not happy about this. She tells her dad that she doesn’t want to wear a mask because the straps bother her ears, and it tickles her nose. These are common complaints children have when it comes to wearing face masks.

Her dad stays calm and tells her that wearing a mask is like a lot of things in life, and that it gets easier with some practice. Julia’s dad then puts on a mask himself, with Julia and her stuffed animal. They practice wearing them while Julia’s dad counts down from five and Julia is then happy and off to the park to have some fun. Sesame Street is going to be releasing more of these videos to help autistic children and their parents through the challenging parts of this pandemic.
