Self-Care 101: You Need To Invest More Time In Yourself, Mama

Christmas, for moms, is the busiest time of year. While kids are jingle-belling, moms are making plans, cooking and baking up goodies, shopping and wrapping presents, decorating and cleaning, all on top of the non-seasonal mom duties that need to happen every day of the year. Of course, moms deserve to enjoy the holidays as well, so this is the perfect time to talk about self-care and making sure that we are taking time out for ourselves.

Many times, it falls to moms to make sure that everyone in the family feels cared for and loved. Far too often, that means that little time and energy is left for a woman to do anything extra for herself. But self-care can help a mom to feel more relaxed and satisfied — it can actually help her to be re-energized and feel like a better mom. It doesn't have to involve an expensive trip to the spa, and thankfully, Walmart Canada has us covered with this handy gift guide (and if your hubby isn't getting the hint -- 'tis the season to treat yourself, mama).

Self-care can be as simple as taking time to put on some nail polish or do an at-home facial, or as extravagant as taking a girls' trip with friends. It's about allowing yourself to do something that is just for you. Pampering yourself with a bubble bath and a glass of wine or indulging in a hobby just for the fun of it (not just sewing to fix your kid's busted seam but to create something that you want to make or baking because it relaxes you, not for the class party next week).

Some moms have a hard time figuring out how they can care for themselves, especially since they are so used to putting others' care first so, here are a few ideas to try (and why it's so important).

These days, the mom uniform has become yoga pants and a messy bun. That's okay on busy days when you're doing all you can to get through the daily grind. But for some women, it's easy to get into a rut. Even though we're certain they look beautiful, especially in their family's eyes, they might not feel good about skipping their preferred beauty routine.

Self-care isn't about looking better; it's about feeling better. For some women taking the time to get a haircut and color feels like an indulgence, but it's a key part of putting themselves back in as a priority in their own lives. Some sweet-smelling lotion and a fun bath bomb can make all the difference in feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, and a trip to a spa or a salon can be the icing on the cake of #MomLife.

While a trip to the spa sounds like a lot more fun than working up a sweat, a trip to the gym can be just as beneficial. Of course, it's important for a mom to keep her health as a priority because her family would be devastated if anything were to happen to her. But more importantly, exercise can release endorphins that make you feel better and happier.

Some women enjoy a run or lifting weights. For others, a yoga mat would be a great gift, so she can do some sun salutations when she has free time at home or takes in a class. It can be good for the mind as well as the body, and that's what self-care is all about.

For many moms, it's not about the money that it costs to do something for themselves; it's the time that is the problem. They make sure that their child is engaged in sports and music lessons and so many other activities, but they may feel like it's too much to ask for their own hobby to be a part of the weekly schedule. Self-care is about making sure that their own creativity and enrichment takes place, even though that might mean that someone else has to take care of dinner for the night.

While some make a hobby out of fitness classes or outdoor exercise, but we may not all be as athletically-inclined. Some women love to set aside a Saturday to make fresh fruit jelly and can it, while others would consider that a chore. For others, baking is their saving grace, while some would feel special if they joined a knitting circle or a music group or spent some time painting. It can be hard to devote a night to something that is just for mom, especially when the calendar is already packed. But self-care is all about devoting some portion of mom life only to the mom, and a hobby can build confidence in everything else that you do. It's a good break from the normal grind that can leave a mom happier when she gets back to business.

Self-care doesn't have to be about the standard spa or gym time, or even doing something that you already know you love. It can be about doing something new and special that you wouldn't normally indulge in. That can be a date night or a wine tasting with your SO. It can be a night in streaming a rom-com she loves instead of her kids' favorite shows or reading a new book after everyone goes to sleep. The options for self-care truly are endless, from buying some things to organize the closet and make things easier for them at home to buying a new outfit or organizing a night with friends. Moms deserve something special just for themselves, and when they care for themselves, the entire family is better off.
