Summer is always a popular time for animated movie releases. Kids are out of school, which means families are spending more time together. Plus, going to see a movie is a great way to beat the heat. This summer, Disney/Pixar is giving us Toy Story 4, but this week, they gave us a sneak peek about their release for summer 2020, which is called Soul.

Disney says Soul "will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions." Obviously that leaves a lot up to interpretation right now. But those examples do provoke some strong imagery. New York City is full of soul, which means a lot of different things. The concept of soul taps into feeling, but also into the idea of your core. Honestly, the idea of exploring "the cosmic realms" is one of the most intriguing ideas.

Soul sounds like it could be in a similar vein to Inside Out, though they may not personify the soul. That would be significantly harder than giving anger a body. But if anyone can pull it off, it is definitely the team at Pixar. Pixar movies are known as the movies that love tapping into our feelings. Usually that means we're crying into our popcorn. Even though we don't know much right now, there's no doubt that Soul will follow in those same footsteps. And given that Soul is being directed by Pete Docter, who also directed Inside Out, we know we're in for an emotional ride. So we should probably start stocking up on tissues now.

According to Deadline, the tagline for Soul is "Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you … you?” Clearly this means that audiences will be going on a deep dive into what makes people work. It seems that they're looking for an appeal to older audiences with this film. Obviously it's still too early to know for sure. But it doesn't seem, based on the descriptions, that this is going to be popular with the under 10 crowd. Pixar's other 2020 release, Onward, while more fantastical, also seems to explore themes that appeal to older audiences.

Of course, this doesn't mean that younger kids won't enjoy them, but it may be harder to hold their attention. Since Soul doesn't come out until next summer, it may be some time before we get any sort of trailer.

Soul is scheduled for release on June 19th, 2020.
