A new study is showing that there may not be any substitute for sleep, and this may be alarming news for all the tired moms out there. It has become mommy-culture; tired moms rely on coffee and caffeine to get them through the day. You see the posts on social media of tired moms who need their coffee in the morning. If it is not only coffee; it is tea or even an energy drink, and they believe that this is what gives them the energy to get them through the day. Hint: that navy blue top you have that says, 'But first, coffee.' However, is there really anything in this world that can replace all those hours of precious sleep that are lost every night?

According to Study Finds, a new study has shown that there isn’t anything that can replace that sleep, and it doesn’t matter how much coffee you drink. The study was completed by researchers from Michigan State University, and it can be read in full here.

While caffeine may give mom a boost of energy, the research is showing that these substances should not be relied on to make up for lost sleep, because it doesn’t quite work that way.

The team of researchers looked at just how effective caffeine was when it came to battling a sleepless night and what happens to a person’s cognitive abilities when they lose that precious sleep.

The study involved 275 participants, and they were asked to stay up all night. In the morning, they were then asked to complete a simple attention task as well as a more challenging task. The more challenging task revolved around “place keeping,” where they were asked to complete various tasks in a very specific and precise order. This is the first study that looked at this type of task on a sleepless night.

The research team found that lack of sleep did impair both types of tasks. However, the introduction of caffeine allowed those to complete the easy task, but it had little effect on the harder tasks. This information is important because researchers found that caffeine can help moms get through the day and complete the easy and mundane tasks, but they may still be hindered in more difficult scenarios, like driving and other safety concerns.

While there may not be a magic trick to get more sleep at night, it is a hint that mom may need to put more effort and resources into helping her get some of that quality sleep that she needs.
