If you were a kid in the 90s, chances are you might have heard of Carmen Sandiego. She was a truly cool, red trench coat wearing super criminal. And you never knew where in the world she was going to pop up. Hence the title of the original show, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? But over time, she also went to space and traversed time. A lot of '90s kids can attribute their understanding of geography to Carmen Sandiego. And thanks to Netflix, now a whole new generation of kids get to experience Carmen Sandiego, just like we did.
Gina Rodriguez (of Jane the Virgin fame) voices this newest iteration of the criminal mastermind. While she looks a little younger than we may remember, she is still donning her trademark red trench and matching fedora. This time around, she has a sidekick, Player (voiced by Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard.) And while she may still look pretty much the same, this new version is giving us the back story that we've never had before.
As a trained thief for V.I.L.E., Carmen is clearly the best villain they've ever seen. But then she realizes that unlike her fellow V.I.L.E. trainees, she doesn't enjoy being a master thief for the sake of stealing. So now, she's embarking on a life of crime, but not the kind that we would expect from a traditionally trained criminal. Along with Player, Carmen begins her descent into criminal behavior.
"What if Carmen was a thief who only steals from thieves?"
As the Netflix description of the show reads, "Carmen is publicly perceived as a criminal by most law enforcement agencies – correction, make that a master criminal due to the sheer scale and theatricality of her heists. We will follow her escapades and get to determine not only where but WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego?"
Described as a modern day Robin Hood, Carmen steals from the thieves and tries to right the wrongs of her peers. Though it may take some time for people to catch on. And as always, Carmen does all her thieving with that flair she was always known for.
Aside from her iconic look, most '90s kids will remember the iconic theme song, sung by Rockapella.
Obviously, the original theme song doesn't fit Carmen's new look, and so Netflix has given her a new jazzy theme song. Written by Jared Lee Gosselin and sung by Raquel Castro, this theme song sounds like it's for a crime noir film from the 1950s instead of kid's show on Netflix. But it 100 percent works for the show.
The new series of Carmen Sandiego is available on Netflix as of 1/18/19. How excited are you to share this show with the next generation?
