Having a conversation about race is very important, it may have never been more important. It is unacceptable that in the year 2020, we still need to worry about racism and injustice happening in the world. It becomes even more important if you are a parent. There have been many memes lately showing that racism is taught, not inherited. We need to change the conversation with our children to lead a more fair and gentle generation that can make real change.

However, the problem is this is a heavy topic. It is a topic that a lot of people find uncomfortable and they wonder how they can properly deliver it to children. They want to make sure it is appropriate and not too overwhelming. Luckily, there are a lot of companies, celebrities and museums out there that are trying to lend out a helping hand to all the confused parents out there.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture has released a web portal, “Talking About Race” to help fuel the conversation. The idea behind this platform is to help individuals, families and communities talk about racism, racial identity and the way they have all shaped the communities we live in.

The online portal will have all the resources that a parent would need. This includes digital tools, online exercises, video instructions and scholarly articles that parents can use to help teach their children about African American history and race. These have all been tailored for parents to use, so it is straight forward.

The museum made a statement that ever since the museum opened, the question they get asked more than any other is how to talk about race with children. There is no better time to start the conversation, and the upheaval that is going on across the world right now is the perfect time. Children are witnessing what is going on around them, and it is the perfect window for an open conversation.

You can access the portal here, and it is completely free for anyone who wants to join in on the conversation. The portal is covers topics like being anti-racist, bias, community building and historical foundations of race. It may be a hard conversation to have but with organizations like this helping us, we can all get through it together.
