A children's museum in Nebraska has been forced to cancel a planned drag queen story hour event due to violent threats. The Lincoln Children's Museum had organized the event with OutNebraska, an LGBTQ organization.

The event was set to be held privately at a time when the museum would be closed to the public. It was family-friendly and being held to support the LGBTQ community in Nebraska. The museum was forced to make an announcement about the cancellation of the event.

On social media, the children's museum explained the safety of their visitors takes precedent, and because of how many threats and the nature of them, they were forced to cancel the gathering. They explained that they had received “an overwhelming number of threats" due to the story hour.

Local Lincoln, Nebraska news station KLKN spoke with a parent opposed to the drag queen story hour. The event was a private event but local parent Gretchen Garrison disagreed with it all together. A mother of four, she told the news “If the event would have been truly private, then I don’t think people would have found out about it."

Both the museum and OutNebraska had previously advertised the storytime to their followers. Garrison's children are now teenagers but she did say that if they were younger, she wouldn't feel comfortable attending.

OutNebraska also received many threats, including death threats, for their role in organizing the 'Drag Queen Story Hour' for families. The non-profit acknowledged the controversy surrounding the event with a post on their own site.

They thank the local community for an outpouring of support and donations in the wake of the cancellation. They also state that discrimination is still very real among the LGBTQ community yet the drag queen story hour will go on with "kindness and empathy." OutNebraska is dedicated to providing a safe space to all LGBTQ children and their families in Lincoln.

The mayor of Lincoln responded in support of both OutNebraska and the museum. As reported by an MSN article, Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird publicly stated that all threats would be investigated by the police. She also said there should be a separation between politics and people's personal lives.

Drag queen story hours have been popular family-friendly LGBTQ events held at multiple libraries, children's museums, and other venues throughout the US.

They're controversial events yet have gone on without incident multiple times. There isn't a reschedule date yet for this one in Lincoln.
