Many parents are worried about the safety of their kids as various schools still debate on whether to open this fall or continue with virtual learning. Such fear has made one mom from Ohio named Hilary Myers invent a "virus veil" with the hope of protecting her five children when they go back to school. The mom-of-five came up with the idea of a "virus veil" in April when there was a spike in coronavirus cases across the US. She thought of something that could cover the entire face to protect the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Myers started making the virus veil for herself and her school-aged kids. However, her kids' school, Bexley City School, is still undecided on whether to open full-time in-person instructions, E-Learning, or adopt a hybrid plan that allows only half of the students enter the school at a time. Governor Mike DeWine announced on July 2 that kids could be going back to school this fall, albeit with a lot of health and safety regulations put in place. Schools would have to be fumigated, and students and staff would have to wear a face mask and keep social distancing as well as continue with handwashing hygiene.

According to Yahoo Life, Myers searched for good materials for her virus veil and a good design that could be worn all day long by her kids. Sewing the virus veils has not been easy for Myers since she is not a seamstress, and sometimes the exercise drove her mad. She says that some materials are hard to sew; but once she got the final product, it was a big relief for her, and it made her happy. She borrowed the idea of a beekeeper veil, and she made its body with a layer of flannel and satin. She made the visor from vinyl fabric for eye protection as well as visibility. Below the veil is a drawstring that can help the user whenever he/she wants to eat or drink.

When Meyers wore her virus veil going out, she received mixed reactions. Although she felt ridiculous moving around with it, she received some nice compliments. Myers says that she has psychologically prepared her kids for any teasing they would get while wearing the veil in school, since she plans to have them wear the veil to school. Dr. William Schaffner, a professor at Vanderbilt University told Yahoo Life that the virus veil was a great idea since it acts as a face shield. Myers says that she does not know what would happen in the upcoming school year, and just like any other family living in uncertain times, they are living one day at a time.
