It's so important that kids know how to get a hold of their parents in case of an emergency. But it can be tricky to get kids to memorize a ten-digit phone number! Shoot, it's hard for US to memorize more than one or two phone numbers, right? But as kids get older and start spending more time away from you at school or events or parties, they need to know your phone number and be able to recite it to another adult. Rote memorization is a good way to get that number seared in their brains, but when it comes to kids, it definitely helps to make it fun! Rather than have your kids just repeat the numbers over and over again until they can recall them from memory, try this trick.

Jen Rice, who blogs over at Playdough to Plato, discovered that the theme song for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse works great as a phone number memorization song! We all know that catchy jingle, right? M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E! We've been singing it since the days of the original Mickey Mouse Club, and once it's in your brain, it's almost impossible to forget. Kids are more familiar with the new animated series on Disney Junior, but the song remains the same!

All you have to do is replace each letter with a digit in your phone number, and for the last part, replace the letter E with the name of the person who the phone number belongs to! Here's an example: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0-MOM! That's your full phone number, with area code, and now they know that the number belongs to mom. It works with all 10-digit phone numbers, and it'll help them remember everyone's, from mom and dad to grandma or their babysitter. All it takes is a bit of practice!

If the song isn't your thing, try making your phone number their iPad or phone password, so they have no choice but to memorize it. Or, you can let them order takeout for the family. They'll be forced to remember your phone number to be able to recite it to the restaurant if they want that pizza!
