If you thought you'd heard the last of the Markle family now that the Royal Wedding is finally over, you'd be wrong! The new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, wed her real life Prince Charming, Prince Harry on May 19. Prior to the wedding day there was much speculation whether Markle's father, Thomas Markle would be on hand to walk his daughter down the aisle.

Thomas Markle had originally planned on not attending the wedding after it was discovered that he had paparazzi shots of himself staged. Some of the photos leaked to online publications showed Markle reading books on England. It was then revealed that Markle suffered a heart attack, but he decided he would attend the wedding if he received clearance from his doctors. In the end, Markle did not attend the wedding, and now he's speaking out about his daughter's big day once again.

Markle told the UK's Good Morning Britain that both his daughter and Prince Harry were upset he couldn't make the wedding. “They were disappointed. Meghan cried, I’m sure — she did cry — and they both said, ‘Take care of yourself, we are really worried about you.’ They said the important thing is that I get better.”

The proud father did state that while he wished he could have been there to walk his daughter down the aisle, he was more than proud that the future King of England, Prince Charles, stepped in for him.

“I absolutely wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle,” he said. “Everybody was watching my daughter and I couldn’t have been more proud. And like I said, how could I ask for a better replacement than Charles? I just wish it could have been my hand holding my daughter’s not his, but I think he was wonderful for doing it,” said Thomas.

The father of the Duchess of Sussex told the morning show that he ended up watching his daughter wed her Prince in a rented B&B that a friend had secured for him, so he could have some privacy away from all the cameras.

“It was a very emotional moment for me, like I said, I cried about it. I wanted to walk my daughter down the aisle. I wanted that moment. But I’m thankful for everything the way it went. I was very proud. I was very upset that it wasn’t me but the whole world was watching my daughter. I was very happy about that.”

It's clear from the anguish in Markle's voice that he wishes he could have been there for his daughter on his big day.

“The unfortunate thing for me now is I’m a footnote in one of the greatest moments in history rather than the dad walking her down the aisle,” he admitted. “That upsets me somewhat.”

Meghan Markle's family became the center of much drama and controversy in the weeks leading up to her marriage. Her mother, Doria Ragland, was in attendance at the wedding and watched as her daughter walked halfway down the aisle alone before being joined by Prince Charles, who escorted her the rest of the way.

Thomas Markle said his new son in-law is a  “great, he’s an interesting guy” and that he called him to ask for Meghan's hand in marriage. “Harry asked for her hand over the phone and I said: ‘You’re a gentleman, promise me you’ll never raise your hand against my daughter and of course I will grant you my permission.’ ”
