The saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," has been around for a good, long time. Apparently, however, it hasn't made much of an impact on social media, where a large contingency seem to think it's totally cool to criticize folks they don't actually know. In fairness, reality television has made it seem like we're a part of a stranger's family, following edited portions of their daily lives. In the case of Mama June (real name June Shannon) and her infamous daughter Honey Boo Boo (real name Alana Thompson), people really don't hold back.
If you aren't up to speed on the outrageous reality family, Mama June experienced quite the personal renaissance after undergoing weight-loss surgery and shedding a tremendous number of pounds. Her own reality show, From Not to Hot, followed the journey, also touching on the challenges she faces keeping the weight off.
Recently the reality star appeared with her daughter at AOL Build, speaking out on her public weight loss and some of the weight she has regained.
"My goal when I was losing weight was always not to go under 200, or not to go over 200, vice versa," she said. "I'm happy where I'm at. And yes, I feel like I do need to lose 15 pounds, but not being able to get up and laying in the bed the last six months with eye surgery, has been very difficult. I've been hard on myself looking at the scale every day making sure it doesn't go over what I don't want it to go over."
Mama June's dedication to a healthier weight and lifestyle is admirable, but haters are looking beyond that and focusing their attention on Honey Boo Boo, whose own health they are calling into question.
Twitter was ablaze with comments suggesting her mother is too focused on herself and needs to streamline Alana's diet. They feel strongly that the, ahem, 12-year-old is overweight. That's right, Honey Boo Boo isn't even 13 years of age yet (her birthday is in August).
"They need to worry about the little girl," wrote one Twitter user. "She's extremely overweight for someone her age and they all think it's a big joke."
Most people who go threw that kind of weight loss surgery will gain it back if they just go back to eating like a pig . People struggle but damn you have to wake up , your kids are going to die early cause they fallow what she does .— Sherry D Rice (@shadowstar30) June 12, 2018
It's a little hard to believe that a parent who has experienced weight struggles of her own and come out on the other side of them wouldn't be concerned about her own kid, if there is indeed an issue. But, as usual, the Internet thinks they know better.
Keep in mind this is a young girl, and words hurt, whether you share your life on television or not. We'd like to think June's weight loss is a wake-up call for the entire family, and that the proud mom is taking care of her daughter as she sees fit. Haters be damned.
