Angelina Jolie is back as the wickedly wonderful dark fairy Maleficent in the first teaser trailer for Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The movie is a sequel to the house of mouse's hit 2014 movie Maleficent which told the tale of the dark fairy and the events that drove her to curse the young baby Princess Aurora.
Jolie is back in the titular role with Elle Fanning returning as Princess Aurora. Michelle Pfeiffer has joined the cast as Queen Ingrith. While the details of the plot are still vague, we know that the movie picks up a few years after the end of Maleficent. Both Maleficent and Princess Aurora are working together to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
Footage from CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month revealed that Prince Phillip has asked Princess Aurora for her hand in marriage in this latest sequel. Pfeiffer's Queen Ingrith is Prince Phillip's mother and seems eager to cause a rift between Maleficent and the Princess. “The queen is a smart woman, which makes her formidable, and that’s fun,” Jolie reportedly said via a video clip at the conference.
“Aurora and Maleficent love each other so much, but there is a huge divide between them,” Fanning added. “Maleficent is still a little wary of the humans, and Aurora is dealing with a burden of coming into a new life to be this cookie-cutter royal, which is not what Aurora is.”
If the trailer is any indication, it looks like Maleficent and Queen Ingrith are going to have their fair share of conflict, and it's definitely not clear who the real villain is in this sequel. What we do know is Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is as visually stunning as the first movie and Jolie is the perfect embodiment of the tortured, dark fairy.
The end of the trailer features a perfect shot of Jolie in all her Maleficent glory, with wings outstretched as she delivers that haunting, perfect laugh while an updated version of Donovan's Season of the Witch plays in the background.
In addition to Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville all are joining the cast.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set to hit theaters on October 18th. Check out the first teaser trailer below.
