Kate Baer, an author, and poet gets real about what motherhood is really like. She believes that there is something special about sharing it on the internet, and many moms agree. The Pennsylvania mom of four likes to get real about what goes on "behind the scenes" of motherhood. Baer just released her brand new poetry collection, "What Kind Of Woman," that released earlier this month.

According to TODAY, The book itself with all of its beautiful and true and real poems takes a deeper look into motherhood and the kind of things that are expected of women and moms. Baer said that she had to deal with quite a bit of discomfort about various things including who she was and how others felt about her.

She has been writing since childhood and majored in English literature, though she never thought that she would be a published author of poetry. She explained that it was not until after she had her children that she decided to let more of the world see her poetry and put it out there on the internet for people to read.

She began with a small blog, which blossomed into a larger blog, and finally, she was putting her poetry up on The Huffington Post for all to see. Over time, though, she became less interested in the mommy blog scene and mommy blog social media in general. She said the internet made a change at that point, and so did she.

Baer said that when it came to writing things like poetry, she always could read it, but she never believed that she could write it as well. With 92,000 Instagram followers, she began her poetry journey, covering everything from post-partum body image to things like cracked nipples. She bared it all for everyone to see the real image of motherhood, not the glamorized version that we all too often see on our televisions.

However, her poetry did not come without criticism, and for quite a while, Baer said that she was deleting "unkind messages" from her inbox. But one day she flipped the script and turned it around, and that made her feel a lot better about what she is doing. Baer herself struggles with depression and found it compounding onto her more when the pandemic and subsequent lockdown hit.

She said now during the pandemic it feels like we mothers are being ignored more than ever and are expected to hold down the household and take care of the children all at once. She says, "it feels like an extra kick to the shins — and to mental health." She also said that the children's cartoon character Daniel Tiger sums it up pretty well, "You can feel two feelings at the same time, and that’s okay."
