A mother in Texas has been charged with the unthinkable- making her healthy son get multiple medical procedures and surgeries. Kalene Bowen has been charged with recklessly causing injury to a child, a charge to which she plead guilty last Thursday.

Bowen, 35, has an 8-year-old son who she claimed was dying from a rare disorder. The 8 year old boy was taken to the hospital over 300 times, and forced to undergo 13 major surgeries due to his mothers claims of illness. According to the Star-Telegram, the boy's father, Ryan Crawford, has apparently been fighting for years that his son was not sick in family courts. However, his concerns fell on deaf ears.

The boy, named Christopher, and his 2 half-siblings were taken out of her care when doctors began to suspect that there was something wrong. Christopher had been fitted with a feeding tube, and his mother had attempted to get him a lung transplant. The boy reportedly had also had serious infections from the feeding tube.

Cases like these are usually a result of Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy, also known as Medical Child Abuse. In cases like these, caregivers are known to make up symptoms or illnesses in their children, or cause or exaggerate ailments in order to get attention. This can mean that children are subject to getting invasive tests and procedures. It can be difficult for doctors to get to the root of the issue, as the children can be getting legitimately sick from medications and procedures that they don't actually need.

Munchausen By Proxy has been in the news lately with the case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a truly shocking example of just how far this can go and the devastating effects it can have. In the case of little Christopher, his father told the Star-Telegram that he is now doing well at the age of 10, away from his mother. Crawford is now determined to bring awareness to cases like these, where children are abused in such a way that you would never expect from a parent.
