As the end of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's relationship played out in public, we were given a great amount of detail due to the public court proceedings. Their divorce ended on an extremely sour note with abuse allegations against each other.

This is a public example that women are just as capable of men as being abusive. As details emerged from this relationship gone south, neither were portrayed in a positive light. Heard was just 22-years old when she met 45-year-old Depp on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009.

Both were in separate relationships at the time. Heard was married to Tasya van Ree and Depp had been in a long-term relationship with model Vannessa Paradis. They had two children together. Depp and Paradis ended their 14-year relationship in June 2012. Heard divorced the same year, and she and Depp entered into a relationship together.

They married in February 2015 and it was over just a year later. Heard went to court seeking a temporary restraining order citing abuse in May 2016. She had a black eye and was granted her request. Depp denied the allegation and in turn, said Heard was the abuser. What followed was a classic 'he-said/she-said" case.

Heard had 14 abuse allegations against Depp. She also alleged verbal and sexual abuse. Heard also said in court she had been given a split lip, a broken nose, and had been fearful for her life. On Depp's side, he claimed verbal abuse from Heard and a severed finger from a broken alcohol bottle. She also denied it all.

This got really messy but as facts came out, they pointed to Heard being an aggressor.  She had previously been arrested for hitting her girlfriend in 2009 so she already had the history working against her.

Depp had character witnesses from the two responding police officers who saw no evidence of violence and from employees working at their apartment building. The incident leaving Heard with a black eye was said to happen on May 21, 2016. An apartment employee testified to not seeing any visible marks on Heard's face on May 21, 2016, or the three days after.

The employee also testified that Heard had a mark on her face on May 27th, 2016, the day she filed in court against Depp. And a day after Tesla founder Elon Musk spent the night with her. The same employee also stated Heard had marks on her body another day Musk had been a visitor.

Through it all Depp was labeled a "wife-beater" by The Sun, and he recently lost his court case in which he sued for libel. The court ruled that Depp will have to live with that label. As a result, Depp was asked to step down from the newest Fantastic Beasts movie in the film series. His career is likely over.

Something to be taken away from this is a real-life reminder to teach our kids that women can be abusive as well, and men can be victims. Women can lose their tempers and seek control. Our boys need to know this as much as our daughters.

Depp seems to be more of a victim in this case and instance. The allegation didn't match the timeline of the couple or Depp's character but that still isn't a guarantee sometimes couldn't have changed on his side.

Usually, when a man is accused of hitting his wife, society reacts in shock and disgust toward the male who dares to beat a woman. Would it be so hard to believe that a beautiful actress could be capable of what Depp was accusing? It sort of was.

This high profile case has put into focus many domestic issues. We see a man losing his career from mostly unfounded allegations and a divorce. A woman is being vilified for coming forward. It's a lose-lose situation.

Looking at some statistics of domestic violence in heterosexual couples, 44% of domestic violence incidents are due to fights. Men and women are fairly equal in who can start a fight and both can escalate the situation. One in four women are victims of violence in a romantic relationship, while one in nine men have experienced the same.

There is also the very real likelihood that both parties of a couple can engage in abusive behaviors. A toxic couple will engage in fighting and violence. Then it will even escalate. One in three women and one in four men have been the victim of physical violence. That violence can include anything from slapping and shoving.

Violence against women is a global problem that can't be denied. Yet, it can't be ignored that men can also find themselves in helpless situations. It is much rarer but more often than we believe women are the aggressors. Women can be abusive towards men in their lives. Their abuse is more reactionary.

The public train wreck of Depp and Heard's relationship is a public example of a toxic relationship. Each party has some guilt but the female has some more inconsistencies.
