"Today I cried at work. Not because I hate my job, or that it is just too hard (it really is). Today I cried for a child, a child who so innocently talked about food, and the lack of it. He asked when the lady that puts food in his backpack was coming … He told me he was out of it at home and needed more. Of course, I asked what was in the bag that he liked so much … I asked if it was the spaghetti o’s, he laughed and told me no that they didn’t have those. Then it happened… he looked at me and said, 'those little o’s (as he made a small circle with his hand), we don’t have those at my house, but when I do have them they give me a warm belly and help me sleep.' I lost it, I cried in front of 20 little people. No kid should ever be hungry, ever."

If you read this and were brought to tears, you are not alone. This is an actual post made by Brook Goins, a teacher at Jacksboro Elementary school onto her Facebook page. The dedicated teacher moved by her student showed that she was more than just words and after this little boy's heart-wrenching story, Goins was inspired to join forces with other teachers to stock up food for the little boy and fill the pantry at his home.

News of their valiant effort quickly spread on Facebook and the support that they received helped to donate food to all of the other children at the school that were also in need of food at home. No Kid Hungry reports that over 11 million children live in homes that are food insecure which means that the households don’t have enough food for every family member to have a healthy and balanced diet and that 1 out of every 7 kids in the United States lives with hunger.

The fundraising efforts at Jacksboro Elementary School in Tennesse went viral and inspired supporters across the country including Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez. When the story of the hungry children and the school's mission reached Jennifer Lopez, she found herself in tears and wanting to help. Lopez, along with fiancé Alex Rodriguez decided to donate $1,000,000 worth of food to the Elementary school and students from Tiller & Hatch, an online meal service that Lopez and Rodriguez are part owners of. This is the equivalent of a year's worth of food.

Lopez shared that she and Rodriguez’s experiences growing up in Latino homes and communities has inspired them to give back to their communities and communities in need. Lopez wholeheartedly agrees that no kid should ever have to go to bed hungry and in an Instagram post talked about how happy she was to be in a position to be able to do this and how it was the best moment of her month and one of the best things she’s been able to do in her life.
