A woman who shared a photo of her curved fingernail on Facebook didn’t expect that it would cause a flurry of medical tests and a frightening diagnosis.

After Jean Williams Taylor uploaded a picture to the social media website, she was urged to see a doctor. She posted a photo of her fingernail which was growing downward at a sharp angle instead of straight out from the nail bed, and asked if anyone had seen anything similar. A number of people responded advising her to seek medical care.

The Wigan, England resident shared her story to a local news page where she explained that although she initially thought the suggestion to seek medical advice was "a tad extreme", she went to see her doctor.

She wrote on the Wigan Today Facebook page: “2 weeks ago i posted this pic on my wall asking if anyone had seen nails like this. A few google post later and i was urged to go to the Doctor. A tad extreme i thought....

Taylor was then rushed for blood tests and a chest X-ray, she noted. Two days later, she was directed to go for a CT scan, and then a PET scan and more blood tests. That led to a breathing test, a heart scan, an MRI and a lung biopsy.

“I was rushed for blood tests and a chest xray, 2 days later i got a phone call to go for a CT scan, 2 days later a PET scan and more blood test, the day later a breathing test on my lungs and a scan on my heart, the day later an MRI scan then a lung biopsy.”

Then after several tests, she was diagnosed with cancer in both of her lungs.

“After a gruelling 2 weeks, yesterday I got my results.......Cancer in both my lungs !!!! When your nails curve its often linked to heart and lung disease and its official term is ‘clubbing’ i had no idea....Did You ????”

The official term for her curved nail is finger clubbing and that the condition, also known as digital clubbing or Hippocratic nails, can be a warning sign of lung or heart disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, nail clubbing occurs when the tips of the fingers enlarge and the nails curve around the fingertips, usually over the course of years.

Nail clubbing is sometimes the result of low oxygen in the blood and could be a sign of various types of lung disease. Nail clubbing is also associated with inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, liver disease and AIDS.

Taylor shared in hopes that her story can raise awareness of changes in fingernails warning of major medical issues.

“Hope this post can help someone else in the early stages of cancer,” Taylor wrote.
