Actor James Van Der Beek recently shocked his fans and followers when he announced that he was packing up his family and moving from their home in Los Angeles to relocate to Texas. Now the actor, who shares five children with wife Kimberly, is explaining exactly why the family was ready for a change of scenery.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that Van Der Beek announced on social media that he and his family had made the decision to move out of Los Angeles. "Sometimes a fuller life begins with an empty house," he captioned a post on Instagram. "Leaving Los Angeles incredibly grateful for all the friends and memories we’ve made here. Onto the next big adventure!"

After a "10-day road trip," with "5 kids. 2 dogs. Plus 2 baby rescue puppies we adopted on day one," the busy and brave actor revealed that the family had finally settled in Texas. In a candid Instagram post, the Dawson's Creek alum revealed why he and his family decided to change zip codes. "And... we’ve landed," he began. "In the last ten months, we’ve had two late-term pregnancy losses, each of which put @vanderkimberly in the hospital, we spent Christmas break thinking she had a tumor (the doctor was wrong, thank god), I was prematurely booted off a reality dancing show I was favored to win in front of the whole world, and my mom died. And a shut-down. All of that led to some drastic changes in our lives, and dreams, and priorities... and landed us here," he wrote, adding that he is "Overflowing with profound gratitude today."

The father of five had announced during his stint on Dancing With The Stars that his wife, Kimberly, had suffered a miscarriage. Sadly he announced again in June that the family had experienced another loss, this time requiring Kimberly to be hospitalized and undergo multiple blood transfusions.

Kimberly opened up about the family's big move during a recent appearance on The Make Down podcast. "I think we're in a time right now where people are wanting to ground themselves a little bit more into nature, and L.A. has been a magical place for many years for me," she said. "So much life has been lived here. "I am going to go through a process to leave. I mean, I birthed 3 kids in the home I am living in."

In a post on her own Instagram page, Kimberly added that " Moving to the country is a dream I’ve had for years," and that the family has "A LOT of unpacking, organization, and projects with our new house." It seems that the timing is perfect for the family to start a new life in Texas, at least for a little while, with Kimberly telling the podcast. "But you know, I've got to get out of the concrete jungle for a little bit."
