With more information coming out in regards to the problematic themes across social media, it has been found that Instagram has been promoting glorified eating disorders to teenage accounts. Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites have come under fire recently for their failure to protect children and youth, and there are even concerns that they are intentionally pushing content that is full of misinformation or harmful information to younger audiences. Sending a stark reminder to moms that they need to be mindful about what their children are seeing when they log onto one of these sites.

According to CNN and California News Times, Instagram, the app owned by Facebook, has been shown to be promoting pages that glorify eating disorders to accounts of teenagers. Teenagers are already a vulnerable group when it comes to mental health and body image, and this could make it worse.

This news comes as Facebook is coming under fire for the impact they have on the mental health of youth. They have been already been shown not to be taking enough action against shutting down pages that promote extreme dieting and eating disorders, but they are now saying that they are promoting these accounts.

Instagram has acknowledged that apps in question have broken its rules and they should never have been allowed on the app in the first place. To come to this conclusion, a government team registered an account as a 13-year-old and followed some of the dieting and pro-eating disorder accounts. It didn’t take long until the app started showing the account more and more extreme dieting accounts that they should follow. This list of accounts was shared with Instagram, and even though the app did remove them, the damage may have already been done.

Instagram has said that they do not allow that type of accounts on their page, and they have removed the ones that were reported. They also said that they are working on improving their response time to remove these accounts. They have also said that they will work with mental health organizations, like the National Eating Disorder Association, to find a balance between helping people share their mental health journeys, while also keeping them safe from these dangerous pages on the platform. It is important that parents have these conversations with the youth in their lives, and make sure they are keeping up to date with pages their children are following.
