Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for friends and family to come together and eat, drink, and be merry! People generally fall into two categories: those who are up for the challenge of preparing a Thanksgiving feast, and those who are better equipped to just show up somewhere with a pie or appetizer. There's nothing wrong with that, either!

Preparing a full Thanksgiving meal for several people is a daunting task. There's tons of shopping, prepping, and cooking involved. And when you host the dinner, you're usually on the hook for the cost. As nice as it is to be able to prepare a feast to feed your loved ones, it can be incredibly expensive. For a lot of families, the cost of preparing a Thanksgiving meal just isn't in their budget. But luckily, there are several grocery store chains and companies that are going the extra mile this year.

If you're having trouble covering the cost of Thanksgiving this year, or just want a little something taken off your grocery bill for the occasion, here's where you can score a free or discounted turkey for Thanksgiving.

1. Albertsons

Through November 22, shoppers who belong to the Albertsons rewards program can score a free Signature Farms turkey after spending $150 in a single shopping trip.

2. ACME

Also through November 22 at ACME stores, spend $100 in a single shopping trip and clip the coupon in the weekly flyer for a free Signature Farms turkey, Jennie-O turkey or Acme-brand's frozen turkey breast.

3. Giant Food Stores

If you've got 400 points in gas rewards through their rewards program, you can trade them in for a free frozen Giant Brand Grade A Turkey up to 20 pounds. You get a point for every dollar spent, but there are plenty of items that will net you double points throughout the stores in November. This deal is valid at Giant stores throughout Pennsylvania, as well as Martin's Food Markets in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

4. Shoprite

If you're enrolled in their Price Plus program and have spent $300 on groceries between now and Thanksgiving (doesn't have to be all in one trip), you can get a free turkey. They even have options for non-turkey fans, like ham, chicken, lasagna, or Tofurky.

5. Fareway

Spend $50 at their Famous Fresh Meat Counter and you can score a free 14-pound Fareway Basted Young Turkey. If you need a bigger bird, the store will apply the discount to the cost of your larger turkey.

6. Weis Markets

If you're enrolled in the store's Preferred Shopper's Club and have spent $400 before Thanksgiving, you can get a Weis Quality Frozen Turkey. You earn a point for every dollar spent, and accumulation started October 4.

Check with your local branches of these stores to make sure they're offering the free turkey promos, as not all stores may be participating.
