"Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome. She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha," the announcement read. "Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world -- even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere."

The viral sensation, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, suffered from feline dwarfism which her owners say has probably contributed to her famous scowl. The cat first became famous back in 2012 when Tabatha's brother posted a picture of Tardar Sauce on Reddit writing, "meet grumpy cat" with the post quickly going viral.

The owners wrote that after that photo went viral many people assumed the picture was photoshopped. To prove that Grumpy Cat was real they posted a few videos on YouTube which also went viral. The rest, as they say, is history.

After posting about the loss of Grumpy Cat thousands have paid tribute on social media, with many commenting about the sheer joy the pictures of the cat had brought them. Grumpy Cat was incredibly popular, boasting more than 2.5 million followers on Instagram, 1.5 million followers on Twitter, 8.5 million fans on Facebook and over 264,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel.

While Grumpy Cat was incredibly popular she was also well loved and cherished by her family, who wrote on their website that they only take posed photos of the cat "once every  week or so, and on the few occasions where we have met with the media or licensed partners we ensure the sessions are short and that she isn't handled by many people."

Grumpy Cat and her owners leveraged her internet fame when she became the official "spokescat" for Friskies and even got her own Lifetime Christmas movie. While Grumpy Cat became famous for her scowl, her owners insist she was anything but grumpy. "She is a super cute and cuddly kitty and loves to be held and rubbed!" they wrote.
