It's no secret that some of those fashion trends that make their way to the front page of every website and fashion blog aren't always practical or even remotely appealing for the average woman. After all, who can forget the asymmetrical jeans that were touted as the next big thing in denim trends? Bootcut jeans were also said to be making a comeback despite the fact that almost no one asked for it, and women everywhere cringed when low-rise jeans were said to be having a moment once again.

There is one new fashion trend that is said to be making a comeback that women everywhere are definitely here for, and that's the return of the granny panty. The granny panty is a term used for underwear that provides full coverage, like a brief, high waisted brief or boyshorts. Thongs have long been the fashion standard when it came to women's undergarments, thanks to the fact that they're cute and sexy and they help to prevent panty lines under your clothes. What they aren't always is comfortable, which is why so many women seem to be behind the movement towards wearing a more comfortable, full fitting pair of underwear termed the "granny panty."

Granny panties aren't just for your granny anymore, although they never really were. Millennials seem to be ditching the barely-there thongs that have been popular for years in favor of a full fitting brief that provides both comfort and style to the wearer. “Within millennial and Generation Y consumer groups, it’s considered cool to be wearing full-bottom underwear,” Bernadette Kissane, an apparel analyst for Euromonitor explained to the New York Times. “Thongs have had their moment.”

Glamour points out that research shows sales of thongs have decreased by 7% over the last year, while underwear styles like the basic brief or the boyshorts have actually risen by 17%. Julia Baylis, who along with friend Mayan Toledano, design for label Me and You, told the NYT that part of the appeal of the granny panty is that they are truly designed with a woman in mind. “Most lingerie is designed to appeal to a man,” she said. “For us, that’s not even a consideration. This is underwear you wear totally for you. Maybe no one will see it, or maybe you’ll put it up on Instagram to share with everyone you know.” Toledano also refuted the fact that granny panties can't be sexy like their thong counterparts. “What’s sexy for us is being natural and comfortable," she said. Most women would agree. “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be more traditionally sexy and wearing a thong; that doesn’t mean you’re not a feminist,” Toledano added. “This is a step toward embracing more variety in what’s offered.”

More and more designers and lingerie stores are embracing the fuller bottomed underwear trend as well, with companies like Victoria's Secret offering hiphugger panties as well as many creating no-show briefs to avoid the dreaded panty line. Sexiness is more about how you feel than how you look, and while some women may prefer to stick to their tried and true thong, having more options offered for all body types when shopping at lingerie stores means that women can choose to wear what they want to feel sexy and comfortable.
