One mom is urging other parents to check their children’s lunch boxes after she made a harrowing discovery checking her own child’s lunch. One mother, named Grace Bollen from New Zealand, discovered the shocking truth when she opened up her child’s lunch compartment just to find that it was a breeding ground for mold during the last school year.

As many parents are getting ready for back-to-school season and are buying new and fresh school supplies, there is one thing that often doesn’t make the list: and that’s new lunch gear. Many moms and dads insist that their children can use the same lunch boxes and lunch compartments they used from the previous year. But that’s not always the case.

According to Grace, she found out the hard way that her son’s sandwich compartment was completely covered in mold, but only after she pulled it apart. She took to her Facebook account to share what she discovered along with a photo for everyone to see.

"So today, something in me prompted me to pry open the glue in the kids lunchboxes. This is what I found. I’m absolutely appalled," the mother wrote on the social media site. "I feel awful that my children have been eating lunch out of these," adding that she would hand wash the lunchboxes every night and let them air dry.”

Grace went on to advise other parents to not buy any lunch boxes that you can’t pull apart or clean. She added that the products were made by Stuck On You and Lunch Box, inc. To complicate matters even more, the products were just nine and 12 months old, meaning that she didn’t have them for very long.

Thankfully, Grace added that both companies are now working with her to rectify the problem and make sure that their products are always water tight. Since then, Grace’s Facebook post has gone viral, with more than 1,300 shares and 1,600 from concerned parents or parents who have experienced the same thing with their children’s lunch compartments.

So far both companies have not said anything about a possible recall, but if you have any questions or concerns, do follow up with the company or your place of purchase. And if all else fails, simply throw away anything that might have the slightest sight of mold on it. It’s always better to be safe than to be sorry.
