Celebrating Mother's Day as a new mom, especially for the first time is a experience you'll never forget. For moms who had a hard road to motherhood, that first Mother's Day is even more special. In honor of her first Mother's Day as a new mom, actress Gabrielle Union shared a very special picture. It captures the first moment she saw her daughter Kaavia James, mere moments after she was born. Kaavia was born via surrogate, but Union and her husband, Dwayne Wade were present for the birth.
In the picture you can see the pure awe on Unions face as she lays eyes on her daughter. Both Union and Wade are donning hospital issue white scrubs and face masks, but you can see the pure joy in Union's eyes. Wade is quickly snapping a pic of the baby as the doctor holds her up Lion King style.

I've cried so many times today for so many reasons, mainly because I'd gotten accustomed to heartbreak and disappointment. I think alot of us live in that space. I set up shop there. This moment reminded me that miracles do happen. You cant age out of joy. You are worthy. You are worthy. You are worthy. Sending so much love today to all the mamas, stepmamas, grandmas, aunties real and play, daddies, friends and anyone who has taken the time to nurture another living soul. I see you, I gotchu. And to those who have lost their mamas, grandmas, mother figures, sending extra love and light and hugs your way. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Gabrielle Union has never shied away from talking about the struggle of having a baby. After suffering multiple miscarriages and numerous fertility tests, the couple realized using a surrogate was their best option at having a child together. But that decision still wasn't easy for Union to accept, as she explained that surrogacy felt like "surrendering to failure."
But getting to celebrate Mother's Day with her new baby understandably gave her all the feels. Along with the picture, she shared some of her thoughts on the overwhelming feelings she was having.
"I've cried so many times today for so many reasons, mainly because I'd gotten accustomed to heartbreak and disappointment. I think alot of us live in that space. I set up shop there," she wrote.
But in seeing her little girl in that first moment, you can see the relief and pure joy on her face. Even though she's already wearing a mask, her hands are covering her mouth. If you've witnessed birth, you know all of the thoughts swirling around her head.
"This moment reminded me that miracles do happen. You cant age out of joy. You are worthy," she adds.
From her many Instagram posts, it is clear that Gabrielle Union has taken to new motherhood with ease. She has been raising children with Dwayne Wade since the beginning of their relationship — Wade has two sons from a previous marriage, and they are also raising his nephew. But it's clear that her relationship with Kaavia is extra special.
