With the world still reeling at the death of Kobe Bryant on January 26, the outpouring of condolences continue to be shared from mourners. But it's not just the impact that Bryant had on basketball, and his legendary status both on and off the court, that is being remembered. Many have flocked to social media to share one of Bryant's greatest achievements; what an amazing girl dad that he made. He was father to 17 year old Natalia, 13 year old Gianna (who also sadly died along with him in the helicopter crash that claimed 9 lives,) 3 year old Bianka, and 7 month old Capri 'Coco' Bryant, all with his wife of 19 years, Vanessa.

ESPN anchor Elle Duncan, shared a particularly poignant memory of Bryant, when he had told her how proud he was to be a "girl dad." Duncan had met Bryant when she was 8 months pregnant with her first child; a girl, and asked his advice on raising girls. In a long Instagram post, where she was pictured with Bryant, she said "I met Kobe Bryant one time... he came over and started talking to me about my impending baby (as you can see I was 13 months pregnant). I asked if he had advice on raising girls— he said "Just be grateful you’ve been given that gift, girls are amazing."

She went on to add that Bryant had joyfully added "I WOULD HAVE 5 MORE GIRLS IF I COULD.. I’m a girl dad I love the challenge of raising women." She movingly finished the caption with "I’m so sorry that 4th girl won’t know her dad," which is surely a sentiment felt by many, in the wake of this terrible tragedy. During a Sportcenter  broadcast, and while recalling her story, Duncan finished with the wonderful sentiment, "when I reflect on this tragedy. I suppose that the only small source of comfort for me is knowing that he died doing what he loved the most: being a dad. Being a girl dad."

When families have just one, or a number of the same sex children in their household, it can be a common misconception that they would automatically try for the opposite sex, or that both sexes are required in order to complete the family. It can deemed callous of others to enquire as to whether a family would continually try for the sex they don't have. Kobe displayed what an awesome man he really was, by feeling the gift of the daughters he had been given, and being proud to raise them to be strong women. He was an inspirational "girl dad," and what a truly wonderful legacy that is to have.
