One of our favorite movies of the past few years was Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. We loved the books, and our kids love the books, and seeing it come to life on the big screen was amazing! There are so many memorable characters in the books and film, but one that really stood out was Emma Bloom. In the books, Emma's peculiarity is fire, but in the film adaptation, she has an air peculiarity.
She can manipulate air, and is unaffected by gravity, so she has to wear these massive lead boots to keep her on the ground. Emma's sweet style paired with the stark metal of the boots makes for a great Halloween costume, but it's unlikely you'll be able to find one in a store. Luckily, this DIY Emma Bloom costume is super easy, and even the craft-challenged can bring it together.
The most important part of your Emma Bloom costume will be the boots.
To make Emma's signature lead boots, you'll need the following:
-plain black combat-style boots
-hot glue gun and glue sticks
-black elastic (to keep the boots on, you'll be removing the laces)
-decorate buckles and drawer pulls (the ones pictured are from Hobby Lobby
-antique silver pigment powder
First, remove the laces from the boots. Cut strips of the black elastic and secure along the front of the boots (they're easy to slide on and off this way!). You can sew the strips onto the boots using the lace holes.
Next, using your hot glue gun, attach the ornate buckles to each side of each strip of elastic. You can also add an antique pull across each strip.
To achieve the ornate design on the boot itself, make curls and vine-like designs using hot glue. Once the glue has dried completely, paint the lower half of the boot with the silver paint and allow to dry. Then, using a Q-Tip, rub each little curl or vine with some of the antique silver pigment powder. When finished, spray the bottom of the boot with Fixatif (it will set the powder).
Emma's dress is a bit easier to make than her boots.
All you'll need is a baby blue nightgown or long-sleeved dress. You can sew on a belt in the same shade of baby blue, and add a small bow at the neckline. Emma is a blonde, so you may need a wig, or you can just rock natural hair. After all, if they could change Emma's peculiarity in the movie, you can certainly change her hair color for Halloween.
Hang on tight, don't float away!
