When Elliot Page came out as transgender, he inspired a lot of people out there to live their truth and one teen had an important message to share. The issues facing the transgender and LGBTQ+ community are still front and center, and that is because the world is still evolving and there are a lot of things to learn. When someone you know comes out as transgender, it is a change and it takes some adjusting and while it may seem “normal” to slip-up or make a mistake every once in a while, we all need to learn some basic etiquette when it comes to how we refer to those who are transgender.

According to SheKnows, one teen from Canada was inspired by Elliot’s story and bravery that it prompted him to make a post on Twitter that went viral. It may not have been his intention, but he was giving us all a lesson on “very basic trans etiquette.”

The teen is 17-year-old Martin and his Twitter thread become so popular that Elliot’s wife Emma Portner even posted it on her Instagram stories. Martin started of by saying that is post was inspired by Elliot Page and that he was going to give everyone the etiquette guide in the thread.

The first rule was to never use a transgender person's birth name. He said that you need to forget that it even existed in the first place.

Martin also pointed out that you need to make sure you use proper pronouns and if you hear someone use the wrong pronouns, correct them. Another big “no-no” is that you never ask a transgender person if they have had any surgeries, or if they are planning on having any.

Martin also highlighted that it is OK to make mistakes and all you need to do is apologize and make a genuine effort to get it right and not make a big deal of it.

Martin said that it all comes down to respect. Martin is also transgender, so he understands the basic needs that this community has. The tweet has over 78,000 retweets and more than 220,000 likes.

The reply threads were incredibly and full of people who wanted to learn, people who wanted to make sure they got it right. One man said that this information is important to him so that he can learn and be the best ally he can be to the community.
