Now that the world has had some time to digest and get used to how it is to live through a pandemic, it is time to reflect. There are countries that seem to have a good handle on it, countries that are seeing a second wave, and countries that are struggling to get through the first wave still. It is now that leaders are reflecting on how they are handling the virus, and if there was a thing they could have done better.
Even moms and dads at home are starting to think about how their city, state, and country are handling it. They wonder if they are truly trying to keep their children safe, and if something more could be done to make sure as few people get sick and die as possible. “Herd Immunity” is something that a lot of people are throwing around and wondering if that was an option.
Herd immunity is popular among viruses and conditions that tend to be contagious. The idea that if enough people have the antibodies to fight it, the virus won’t easily spread. According to People, this is not something that would likely work and it comes from Dr. Fauci.
Dr. Fauci recently had an interview on Instagram Live with Matthew McConaughey. Matthew asked about herd immunity and if it was something the US could have implemented and if it would have worked.
The answer was a resounding ‘no.’ Herd immunity is reached by two things, either a vaccine or enough people get sick with the virus and stop the spread. Dr. Fauci said that if the US had allowed herd immunity to happen by letting people get infected, the death toll would simply be too high.
“If everyone got infected, the death toll would be enormous and totally unacceptable,” this is what Dr. Fauci had to say about the issue. The death toll would likely include people of all ages and backgrounds. It is not an ideal situation for anyone, much less a mother –a mother who has to worry about her children, her life and even her aging parents. Dr. Fauci still stands firm that the best way they are going to get herd immunity is through a vaccine that is currently being worked on.
