You may not know who actress Dove Cameron is by name, but chances are your kids do. The young actress has joined the ranks of many Disney darlings who are quickly finding success outside of their child star roots. Cameron's star is on the rise and it won't be long before parents and kids alike know exactly who Dove Cameron is.

Who Is Dove Cameron?

Actress and singer Dove Cameron was born Chloe Celeste Hosterman on January 15, 1996, in Seattle Washington. The multi-talented Cameron began acting in community theater when she was just 8 years old, and after her parents divorced she and her mother moved to LA. Sadly Cameron's father took his own life when she was just 15 years old. "He took his own life, and he also was closeted, which we only found out after he died," she shared with Entertainment Weekly.

Cameron actually shared that her father is the reason she changed her name to Dove, telling a fan on Twitter that, "my father always called me Dove. he took his own life when I was 15, I didn't get to say goodbye, so I changed it in honor of him."

Cameron admitted that she was bullied in high school and experienced depression, but her love of performing helped her persevere. She landed the coveted title role in Disney's hit series Liv and Maddie when she was 15 and hasn't looked back yet.

What Is Dove Cameron Famous For?

Cameron first rose to fame playing twins Liv and Maddie for four seasons on the hit Disney show of the same name. Her performance as the twin sisters earned her a 2018 Daytime Emmy in the category of Outstanding Performer in a Children’s, Preschool Children’s or Educational and Informational Program. Cameron, known for being a talented singer, dancer, and actress thanks to her portrayal of fashionista Liv and sporty Maddie, landed the lead role in Disney's made for tv movie Descendants.

The movie followed the lives of the teenage children of many of Disney's classic villains, with Cameron starring as Mal, the daughter of villain Maleficent.  Descendants became a huge hit for Disney with Cameron as the face of the franchise.  The movie spawned two sequels, with Descendants 2 premiering in 2017 and Descendants 3 airing earlier this month.

But like other Disney stars before her, Cameron isn't limiting herself to just Disney roles. She voices Spider-Gwen in the animated film Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors and Marvel Rising: Chasing Ghosts. She also appeared in Marvel’s Agents of Shield on ABC and starred as Amber von Tussle in NBC’s production of Hairspray Live. She's appeared in the movie Barely Lethal with Hailee Steinfeld, Jessica Alba, and Samuel L. Jackson and will also voice a character in the animated movie Angry Birds 2 that is due in theatres in September.

She also starred as Cher in the Off-Broadway production of Clueless, The Musical as well as appearing in the Netflix movie Dumplin’ with Jennifer Aniston.

Cameron is also a talented singer and has been recording her own music since she was 15. While fans of the star have seen her sing often on both Liv and Maddie and in the Descendants, they've been waiting patiently for the star to release her own music. She revealed just a few months ago that the wait may be over soon. She explained that her own music has long been delayed by contract clauses and other professional obligations, but fans can expect to hear something from the star in the next few months.

Not only is Cameron a talented singer, actress, and dancer but she's also an outspoken feminist who isn't afraid of causing a little controversy. After recently posting two pictures on Instagram where she appeared braless, wearing a white tank top, Cameron was criticized for many for not being a good role model for younger girls. She responded by captioning her picture with her excerpts from the book, "Singing Woman: Voices of the Sacred Feminine."

Who Is Dove Cameron's Boyfriend?

Cameron had just broken up with former fiance and Liv and Maddie cast-mate Ryan McCartan when she met current boyfriend Thomas Doherty on the set of Descendants 2 where he plays Harry Hook. The two hit it off immediately, but it wasn't until a few months later that Cameron officially confirmed the two were a couple.

Cameron explained to E!News that it Doherty took only a week of the couple knowing each other before he confessed that he was falling in love with the actress, and despite her feeling that the timing wasn't the best, she quickly began falling for him as well.

The couple has been together for almost three years now and seems happier than ever. "My relationship with Thomas has been different than anything I’ve ever experienced with another human right from the very start," she told Seventeen. "I know this is cheesy, but honestly, right from the moment we met, it felt like the earth moved, for both of us."

Dove Cameron On Descendants

Cameron landed the lead role of Mal, daughter of Maleficent, in Disney's hit Descendants franchise which first premiered in 2015. Even though Mal's mother is evil, she aspires to be more and wants others to be happy.

Cameron told Seventeen that she loved playing the character over the last three movies and truly having a say in how she changed. "So much of me is in Mal because she wasn't complete when I got to her. I got to really craft her," she explained. "She's incredibly self-possessed, very strong, very persistent, and resilient."

Cameron loves playing the character so much she once tweeted, "mal is the love of my life."

Cameron has brought Mal to the small screen three times with each Descendants movie, and the jury is still out on whether there will be a fourth movie. In her interview with E! News, when asked about the possibility of another sequel, Cameron said that "the world of Descendants is never quite closed," giving fans hope that there may be another Descendants movie in the works. You never know!
