IT is the highest-grossing horror film ever, not surprisingly. Leading up to its premiere on September 5, 2017, it was the most anticipated horror film to be released last year.
The film has set numerous box office records and grossed $700 million worldwide, making it the most profitable horror film. But the film also received positive reviews, with critics praising the performances, direction, cinematography and musical score, with many calling it one of the best Stephen King adaptations.
Set in the summer of 1989, the film tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine, who are terrorized by the eponymous being, only to face their own personal demons in the process. The film is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Stephen King, which was also adapted into a 1990 miniseries.
Now, fans are patiently awaiting the theatrical release of the film’s sequel, It: Chapter Two, which is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2019.
So Pennywise continues to be a popular Halloween costume this year, and next… but to purchase a costume is quite expensive! If you have a little ghoul in the house who would like to dress up as Pennywise, you’ll find yourself with a challenge – spend upwards of $150 or do it yourself?
A Pennywise mask alone is $54.99! Over $100 for the costume on Amazon, and $169 for this look-alike costume from Fastcosplay.com. But with a little bit of time, money and creativity, you can make your own Pennywise costume.
Then, you’ll need to take a trip to the dollar store and buy an inexpensive orange wig, a bald cap (or find one at Amazon.com like this one), hot glue, coffee filters, and some red yarn or purchase for $2.97 at Amazon.com.
Then, the work begins! Fold the coffee filters into fours so that they resemble a ruffle neck. You can do the same for the shoulders, and waistline as well. Use hot glue to adhere to the shirt and leggings.
After applying the coffee filters but before adding the pop poms, you can opt to spray paint the costume with a metallic silver paint for $8.54 to better resemble Pennywise’s costume from the 2017 film.
Here’s how to make the pom poms:
With the orange wig, transfer the hair to the bald cap, or simply adjust the wig so that it better resembles Pennywise’s hairline. You’ll need to wear the bald cap along with the wig in order to have the high hairline.
Use white makeup or a pale powder to cover the face, and a red lip liner and/or red lipstick to duplicate Pennywise.

Maybe not completely as a $200 costume/mask, but for less than $35, perhaps Pennywise himself would approve.
