Disney has been making a killing with their live action versions of classic animated films. The live action adaptation of Aladdin has made a billion dollars worldwide. And this summer, The Lion King was one of the most popular movies. Next up is a live action adaptation of Mulan, and the official trailer was just released. It looks like a truly epic blockbuster action film, very different from the animated film we all know and love.

Since Disney released the first teaser trailer, it was clear that this Mulan was going to be different. It's far more similar to the original story of Fa Mulan, so there are a lot of big differences. Unfortunately for us, this will not be a musical. That means no live group singing "I'll Make A Man Out of You" and dancing sadly. It also looks like Mulan may not have her love interest, the handsome General Li Shang either. But the saddest thing is there's no Mushu the dragon (hilariously voiced by Eddie Murphy in the original.) However, it looks like this Mulan has a phoenix, which may actually be cooler!

Per the movie's description: "When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father."

Based on "The Ballad of Mulan," the villain in this new version is Böri Khan. He is just as menacing as the original villain Shan Yu, and his sidekick is still a falcon. Except this time, his falcon is a shapeshifter.

It's clear that the creative team put a lot of care into the film. Just going from the trailer, it is visually stunning. The fight scenes look amazing, kind of like a Disney Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Even though there are a lot of things that may be different, one thing remains. Mulan is a totally fierce warrior and will bring honor to us all.

Mulan is scheduled to arrive in theaters March 27th, 2020
