Disney has finally released the first full-length trailer for its live-action remake of their hit 1994 animated classic The Lion King, and fans can't get enough. The trailer is a visually stunning combination of live action and CGI and re-introduces fans to the cast of animal characters they have loved since the movie was first introduced to audiences.
The trailer opens with Scar, voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor, speaking to a young Simba and Nala saying, "life's not fair, is it my little friend?" as the young cubs explore the elephant graveyard while the very frightening and sinister looking hyenas lurk in the background. The scenery of the film is breathtaking, from the majestic images of the Africa Savanna to the incredibly realistic images of the stars of the film itself.
The trailer shows the exile of young Simba and follows him through his transformation from young, scared cub to the future lion king. If the trailer is any indication, this remake will stick very closely to the story of the original film, something that Disney purists will be very happy about.
This current live-action remake is directed by Jon Favreau who also directed Disney's successful Jungle Book remake and features a veritable who's who of Hollywood stars lending their talents to the voice cast. In addition to Ejiofor as Scar, the movie also stars Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, John Oliver as Zazu, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon. According to Disney, Favreau "utilizes pioneering filmmaking techniques" to bring these beloved Disney characters to life.
The Lion King remake is the latest in a long line of live-action remakes of Disney classics to be released in recent years. This year alone we've seen the release of a live action version of Dumbo as well as the trailer for the upcoming remake of Aladdin.
Four of the songs from the original movie, "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," "Hakuna Matata," "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" and "Circle of Life," will appear in the remake, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. Elton John and Tim Rice, who wrote and composed the songs from the original film, are collaborating with Beyoncé to release a new original song for this film.
The powerful and awe-inspiring trailer will leave fans with a smile on their face as the final shot features Timon and Pumbaa prancing through the jungle.
The Lion King is set to hit theaters on July 19th, 2019.
