The much-anticipated trailer for Disney's live-action remake of their classic animated hit Aladdin is here, and it's definitely a whole new world! The trailer gives us our first look at Will Smith in action as the mischievous and hilarious Genie, as well as Mena Massoud as the charming Aladdin and Naomi Scott as the beautiful Princess Jasmine. The film also features Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Navid Negahban as the Sultan, Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, a new character who is a friend and confidante to Jasmine, and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders.
The trailer not only introduces the title characters to an entirely new generation of fans, but it also features two of the movie's most classic and well-recognized songs. At almost halfway through the trailer we're introduced to Smith's Genie, who breaks in to "Never Had A Friend Like Me" before Scott and Massoud are seen soaring through the air on the magic carpet belting out "A Whole New World."
When the first images from the movie were released, many took issue with Smith's blue-faced Genie and doubted he could ever fill the shoes of Robin William, who famously voiced the animated character in the 1992 animated version. The trailer seems to have put some of those concerns to rest, with Smith's Genie showing off his comedic and vocal talents as he interacts with Aladdin. The actor told Variety he tapped into some of his previous roles in bringing his version of Genie to life. “I think it’ll stand out as unique even in the Disney world,” Smith says. “There hasn’t been a lot of that hip-hop flavor in Disney history.”
Scott is also excited about the updated version of Jasmine she gets to play. “There are so many amazing new things about the character in this adaptation — I could literally go on for an hour!” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “Everyone involved in this project weren’t afraid to really just rip things down and start again, especially the Princess Jasmine character, because it’s so important to get that right," she explained. "You really get in this adaptation of the movie that her heart is for her people, and her main objective is what's best for her kingdom," Scott added. "And you really get a sense that she has those leadership qualities within her."
The movie is being directed by Guy Ritchie and brings back Alan Menken to provide the score. There will be new recordings of the movie's original and beloved songs as well as two new songs by Menken, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul that will no doubt quickly become family favorites. Aladdin is scheduled to hit theaters on May 24th, 2019.
